As Antonius’ investigation turns to Achillia--a warrior fighting for her freedom--he discovers her involvement with a woman who seemingly has mystical abilities. Upon going to question Achillia, Antonius finds himself side-by-side with her, in the middle of the arena, preparing to fight for their lives.
Peter is telling one of the most interesting stories in comic books today. I don’t say that lightly or flippantly because what he’s doing is telling the story of the world’s first detective in an era where gods, superstition and madness ruled more than anything else. Yes Nero is a mad Emperor and he doesn’t realise that which is half the fun where he’s concerned. However it’s also that Antonius was given the knowledge by the Vestal Virgins so that he may do their bidding. Then add on top of all this the fact that while Antonius was a Roman Soldier of much renown the actual using of these new abilities is something that’s a more on the fly kind of thing so mistakes will be made.
It’s a combination of this myriad of things that converge in one point in time that makes this what it is. That I could see Antonius running into any of the Anni-Padda boys is relevant but not necessary to see. This is that alternate history story that marvel's readers at the prospect that things could have actually gone down in this manner. It’s so realistic in it’s conception that it boggles the mind.
Juan Jose Ryp is one of the absolute best artists working today point blank period. His attention to detail is light years above anyone else’s. The way he uses page layouts through how angles, perspective and most importantly backgrounds are utilised that really takes you this point in time. You feel like you are in this era where technology was non-existent as we know it anyway and magic was something to be feared. The rippling of muscle, the expression on faces, the way clothes drape and move on the body immerse the reader.
Antonious sees the world in a new light and it doesn’t contain the gods or magic as these folks understand it. It’s herbs, manipulation and the powers that come from hallucinogens that make magic. That Peter can show us this journey he’s taking and show us the intricacies of his life as he tries to navigate these different worlds in a new and unique way is one of the highlights for me. There is absolutely nothing like this in any form of fiction, comics, novels, movies or television and that makes this some groundbreaking storytelling.
While he hasn't’ taken on an apprentice, at least till his son comes of age, he’s the only one of his kind. Even his friend and confidant cannot fathom how he does what he does and that we see it and question it as well is why we keep coming back.
Through some of the most original and unique storytelling around the most gorgeous interior artwork these folks do what others only dream of being capable of.
