The more we see the more I want to see because the whole concept here is just shy of bat-shit crazy eating some Carolina Reaper’s while tightrope walking over the Grand Canyon. Each turn of the page takes us to this new place and we’re left scratching our heads wondering what exactly is happening here. It is a great thing to experience too as I love not knowing a damn thing ahead of time so that I am constantly surprised at what I am seeing and wondering about the motives behind the actions we see.
The way that this is being told is incredibly solid. How the story & plot development we see moving forward through how the sequence of events unfolding as well as how the reader learns information is impeccably done. There are some extremely interesting things that happen as we take the journey through the story and I gotta say if this is what we already see in the second issue I can’t wait to see what else is in store for us. The character development we see is outrageous on so many levels I mean these are you characters you come up with and they have real life counterparts then those are the folks I want to meet, like yesterday. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way we see how everything works together to create the books ebb & flow.
The way that this is structured is amazing and watching it play out and making the voices in your head for each character is how you become engaged in the book. Once you're engaged then skies the limit because the possibilities are endless. The creativity and imagination that is involved in all aspects of the book is on full display and it’s rather quite infectious so that it bleeds into the reader’s own mind and imagination.
Steve is an amazing artist. The linework that we see here is phenomenal and how we see the varying weights and techniques being utilised here really makes the attention to detail pop. From ages lines to jacket patterns what we see Steve do is bring character to each individual character. The way that we see backgrounds being utilised to expand the moments as well as bring us depth perception, a sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story is beautifully done. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a masters eye for storytelling. The colour work is sublime. I love how we see the various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work. Then to see the muted colours through glass oh yeah this is a colourist right here. How the colour is also utilised to create some depth, dimension and how it draws the eye through parts of the city is a complete wow factor.
This book is nothing short of absolutely amazing. Ahoy knows who has the talent and the skills to represent their publishing house. This has an amazing rhythm to how it’s told and how we see this fantasy world for the rich and deviant. Come aboard, we’re expecting you and there is no way that you are going to want to leave. This is storytelling par excellence!
