I think the opening of each issue so far showcasing the death of one of the infected has been wonderfully done. This time around to be honest I was expecting something else so that little surprise well it worked wonders. Plus I have to say whether intended or not that opening is a pretty powerful commentary on society today and more so of women in the public be they actresses or models.
I do like how we are seeing this world being fleshed out more. A Beauty talk show host who has the power of say Oprah with her influence and viewership. Yeah it’s the little things that demonstrate how well thought out a series is before it goes to publication that has the ability to resonate with an audience whether they realize it or not. Plus pulling her into their circle of confidence well that’s a huge risk but considering everything they’ve had to with so far i’d say it couldn’t hurt any worse than what they’ve been though.
Then a rather unexpected thing happens as our disgraced and let go scientist is at home with her wife and children. It’s a touching scene really and it fascinates me to no end that working for whom she did she never got Beauty in the first place. I love that she’s kind of homely and definitely not someone you’d look twice at. Stereotypically a scientist type sure but that’s have the well beauty of her.
The action really gets going this issue as well. Calaveras is on the hunt for our Detectives and he’s a merciless and highly effective killer. So suddenly we’ve got a whole nother level of excitement happening, kind of like you’d see in one of those Bourne or Mission Impossible movies. Plus now that our duo has become a trio it’s and he’s not really had any kind of formal military or police training but has learned how to survive off the grid as it were really helps them out immensely.
Then of course let’s not forget to add a touch of the creepy here as well. By that of course I mean seeing Ms. Abernathy and you’ll have to read the book to understand why I feel this way but trust me when I say it’s disturbing on so many levels and so utterly fascinating at the same time.
Well our trio could now become a quartet and wouldn’t that be nice though to be honest as the numbers of those working together grow the more they become at risk of being discovered and killed but hey with a cure so close how can they afford not to work together? Actually with everything that has happened this issue suddenly things are seemingly heating up to a point where these characters are going to be lucky to get anything done as they keep moving forward and running for their lives. But hey that’s half the excitement to look forward to now isn’t it?
Aside from an incredibly damn good strong and well crafted story Jeremy’s interior artwork is off the hook. I mean I still marvel at the transformation from handsome rugged everyday cop to drop dead gorgeous one. Plus that our scientist, who kind of looks like a bird, is so far the opposite, well with our anti-beauty terrorist being an average looking guy, it’s just nice to see how subtle yet strong Jeremy can work with in his illustrations.
Really there should be no doubt than when it’s time for voting this should make best new series of the year category.
