The Transformers ‘80s cartoon series meets Star Trek: The Animated Series in a no-holds-barred Saturday Morning mash-up for the ages! At the edge of Klingon space, the Starship Enterprise finds there's more to the final frontier than meets the eye, when Kirk and his crew come face to face with the strangest life forms of all: Cybertronians! This unprecedented crossover brings together two of the greatest science fiction universes of all time—in the style of their classic animated series! A five-year mission meets a four-million-year war!

Honestly I wasn’t going to read this until I actually looked at and realised it was the cartoon version of both franchises were being used. Then I was in like Flynn as the saying goes. I was 3-4 when the cartoon aired so I had to catch em on reruns but I adored it and still do. Now I am not a Transformers person never have been and though I have tried I never really will be but hey that’s okay because the fact that we are in a cartoon crossover just means it’s going to be hella good. So get ready for a Saturday Morning showdown that will make you crave a bowl of Boo Berry to wolf down in your pyjamas!

The way the guys open this up is classic Star Trek manner with Kirk and his Captain’s Log giving us the low-down on what has brought the Enterprise to this place and point in time. So having been called to Cygnus Seven and a Dilithium Mine which of course we all know is what powers the ships of Starfleet. Apparently it is also something the Transformers need as power as well at least that is what I am guessing or inferred from reading this issue. Either way it does indeed cause for an immediate confrontation between the Decepticon’s and the Starfleet outpost.

The way this book is structured is utterly fantastic as they create a perfect ebb & flow to the story. We get information and meetings and some of the very best dialogue around. I love the fact that we get Sulu using his most famous line today in the book and anytime that I get to hear “Dammit Jim” I am a happy camper. The whole issue even when dealing with Optimus Prime was flawlessly done. The meeting between and the misunderstanding as well as what is learned from their tricorders all of it is so well constructed. Lest I forget M’Ress yes ma’am I love that the cartoon could include these alien beings so fully when the show could not.

I love that this has that old school cartoon feel like from the days when the actually used cels, I have some of my own from the Super Friends just saying. That it is so on point and it feels exactly like the cartoon should and I am blown away by that fact because it’s so eerie to see it on the page like it was taken from the actual cartoons. The utilisation of page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective show off a great eye for storytelling. With the cartoon style we don’t always get backgrounds and that’s still the same here as well and for one of those rare times I don’t mind it. Otherwise the attention to detail and the overall mood, tone and feel of the book couldn’t be any more perfect.

With Kirk and the Enterprise, Optimus Prime and his Autobots, Megatron and his Decepticons as well as the Klingons well yeah this is what a true crossover team-up is all about. So if you want to have your childhood come back to you in a way that you never thought would actually be able to happen you NEED to be reading this.

Chronic malcontent David Weathers dies and goes to Heaven-where everything is terrible, and everybody hates a complainer. Also we’ve got contributions from Chris Giarrusso, Grant Morrison, Rick Geary and Shannon Wheeler making this first issue spectacular truly spectacular.

This is the second offering from Ahoy Comics and I have to tell you when you are phased out of the name brand companies, yes DC and Marvel, where do you? Sure there are a ton of new up and coming companies out there that would be thrilled to have them but what if they all went some place new? That new place is Ahoy Comics and the line-up of creators they have is impressive and it also goes to show that those who know how to make comics can still bring us the joy they are so known for.

This issue here is something I wasn’t sure what it was going to be about. That being said I absolutely loved this! We all know that Negative Nancy, yes I was one once upon a time, who is toxic and complains incessantly that their life is horrible, nothing goes their way and they have no friends. Personally I changed my life around when I learned I was doing that but I have cut a ton of folks out of my life for this behaviour. Why am I talking about here? Simple it is something that absolutely everyone can relate to.

We all know that person, cringe and want to turn away but here, here we see that taken to the extreme. The opening is spectacular David’s birth which is where it all begins, ironically however that Doctor spanks your ass to make you cry so they hear your lungs the only thing I can think of is that he never stopped. Still it’s eye catching, dynamic and draws the reader in beautifully creating that desire to know more and that’s exactly what it’s supposed to do. Then the pacing of the book as it moves forward is amazing to see as we watch everything unfold around David. So the characterisation doesn’t take long to establish right so I am looking forward to seeing where Tom goes with all this because if there is growth I will be impressed.

Great Scott, apropos because I am a huge fan of Greg’s and I say that every time I review a book he works on. The man is a modern day maestro and the way he manipulates the varying weights of the linework to create such subtle lines as we see in say the arm hair to the boldness of black at the funeral and every thing in between has such amazing attention to detail. It isn’t just the fact that he’s so detail oriented but the emotions and feelings that come from the characters through their faces and body language is utterly sensational. The utilisation of page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels plus seeing how backgrounds are utilised show such an impressive eye for storytelling. Andy is a great compliment here as his work just blends seamlessly onto the page completing the work in bringing it to life.

There are certain books that once you read them you suddenly find yourself in a place where you have a connection with that makes you feel like this is something you’ve read most of your life. This is one of those books. With old friends who know how create, craft and bring to life the best of the best stories available today there is absolutely no way you can go wrong.

Leo wasn't allowed toys as a kid, but now that he's all grown up he's going to take yours. He used to play by the rules, but then governments and corporations set fire to the rules and still expected him to behave. He probably would have if it hadn't been for his new friend Jerry. See, Jerry isn't human; he's a personalised marketing VR... and he's malfunctioning.

I was not expecting this to be anything quite like it is. I mean the opening had me all like what the hell is going on here and on a side note it’s interesting that 1996 is a flashback date and since I am old it’s even worse lol. Though in all reality it is very cleverly done and it shows us a young Leopold and how he and his father’s relationship worked, also probably the moment that changed his life forever so there’s that too.

Props on the Newspaper headline as well I like the play here and it works well. Mainly because the truth is I believe that in the effort to become more advanced with out technology we’re losing sight that we’re moving too fast and society as a whole is isolated, individuality is nearly gone and the main purpose people seem to have is that of consumer. Of course the Republican Party would like us all to remain uneducated and ignorant so they can rule with impunity but that’s another story entirely.

I do like seeing Leo in his day to day life and with a woman who cares about him but only insofar as she can benefit from him. That my friends is how the general public sees the entertainment industry people. Not a great example to set or live by but hey that’s the world we live in. As it stands it’s great for Alex to use a part of his ongoing characterisation of Leo. I think the whole situation speaks volumes as to why our introduction went the way it did. Alex is very much impressing me with how we see Leo through deeds and words not to mention those who surround him that enable him to be who he is at the moment.

The interiors here are interesting. I like them there is some extremely good attention to detail in what we see as well as some weird ambiguity to it as well. It almost feels like this constant study in contrast and I think that surprisingly it works on every cylinder possible. A little disappointed he got out of bed and we saw nothing not even chest definition or lack thereof or even that the ass on that horse was blurred, those shows don’t do that ya know, and I do wish we’d gotten more backgrounds utilised. Still the utilisation of page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels shows off a strong eye for storytelling. The whole thing benefits greatly from Dee’s colouring. The colours are splendid, bright or muted or just in your face this is it stuff and it really creates that mood and dimension needed.

So why Leo is go-go dancing at a gay bar is something I want explored more because if he’s bi-sexual he just got incredibly more interesting to me. I think one of the aspects to this issue and the story as a whole that I was unprepared for was the concept. While I was thoroughly entertained throughout the entire issue getting to know Leo and that edging of the anticipation was all worth the wait when see the ending. Suddenly things make sense and my eyes got wide and I knew then and there unlike Big Brother this is where you should expect the unexpected.

With incredibly writing, pacing and characterisation wrapped around some truly unique and interesting artwork this is going to be the book we talk about through the New Year.

Zachariah Thorn #1
Indigo Comics 2015
Created & Written by Scott Reichert
Illustrated by Bonkz Seriosa
Coloured & Designed by Robert Reichert

It’s been 10 years since Zachariah Thorn inadvertently tore the veil between our world and the darkness beyond. Now his dark gift is his only weapon in his quest to banish the evil he has wrought. After being contacted by a despondent Stanislav, Zach finds himself venturing into the woods of Bulgaria in search of the Clandestine Rusalka….

Here is the deal with these self-published books, they tend to come out at a very uneven pace because it really is a labour of love and the money has to be raised to create the next issue. Nowadays we have kickstarter and such but most of the time it’s hard for folks to get those funded. So this is why I love when we support books like this so they can create something wonderful and let the passion they have for what they are doing shine through. I was, am and continue to be incredibly impressed with the quality of storytelling that appears in these pages. While the subject matter isn’t new the way it’s approached is and I like that and I want to see more. So it’s a good thing issue #2 is out as well.

I like how the series opens that kind of previously blurb to give a hint of background information followed by our first look at Zach. It has an impact and allows the reader to see what kind of things haunt this young man and gauge through his reactions what kind of man he’s becoming. I say becoming because each of us is in an eternal mode of transition we are constantly growing, learning and evolving and to see that potential in the character so quickly is very well done. It draws the reader in and creates that want in them to know and see more.

Let’s have a chat about the interiors here shall we? I am blown away by the level of work done by Bonkz and Robert. The attention to detail is utterly amazing and the manipulation of the linework through it’s varying weights just brings this to life beyond anything I could have hoped for or expected. Then there is the face that the background in places is blurred showing a keen sense of how focus is used really made me smile. One thing I will say is that while the people look incredible I would like to see more backgrounds utilised because when they are used they really have an impact on the story. The utilisation of page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels shows off a great eye for storytelling as well. Overall the consistency of what we see is amazing.

The way that this is structured is extremely well done as we get to see the introduction of his friends and his life. The way that things meander about and end where they need to be is a lot more entertaining than the usual cut to tactic that’s all too prevalent in comics today. Part of me feels a bit of old school vibe with this but it’s totally modern and just kind of feels comfortable yet new and exciting so yeah. When Zach is with his friends it isn’t because it’s old home week, unfortunately, but because someone needs help, specifically his kind of help. So take that for what you will be remember the characterisation here constantly evolves.

I like seeing what we did this issue. There wasn’t this big origin story or flashbacks to what happened, instead we are introduced to him, his life and those who share with him already in progress and I think that’s the right way to go. Back story can be done later if it’s desired but I am more than happy with what is given here. Smart, intelligent and honest between friends look at life that well you might want to think twice about having.

“On the run, Zihao and Harper try to hide in the shadows as they plot their next move forward. Zihao thinks the hard part is over and that he can chart a new path, but his past life isn’t done with him yet. Not by a long shot. Jasper dedicated a lot of resources to Zihao’s development, and he aims to see a return on his investment, one way or another!

I am in love with this book mainly because it has all the feel of some Japanese Manga film and partly because it just has this amazing action/adventure feel. Throw in a mystery and there is one here I can sense bubbling just below the surface behind the actions taken here and suddenly it takes on a whole new shape. The opening is sensational with the robotic bunny and the narration which I kind of feel is a commentary on life today as well just set the tone for what’s to come.

The way that this is structured is very well done. There really is a nice flow to what we see here as the Zihao and Harper try to find a safe haven away from the prying eyes of Jaspar. Speaking of which this Central District Monitoring Authority talk about the ultimate big brother moment I have seen to date. It boggles the mind that Alex can bring that to life the way he does and then Mark and John finish it off like they do because that moment is among the many Wow in the book. Everything we see and learn has a purpose and yes there is some nice action and kicking butt in here as well.

The characterisation is pretty damn good as well. We are really getting a chance to know these characters, finding moments to bond with them. J.T. has that ability when he writes to really get the reader inside the people he writes about. It is rare that he can do this as well as he does and it’s a part of what makes reading the books he works on something we want to read. I like the idea of Zihao getting out and moving up and realising that what he wanted isn’t what thought he wanted and then needed to get out.

Alright so I have stated that I am a huge fan of the interiors here already and I really mean that I love the way that you can almost see the pencils through the inks. The linework here is gorgeous and to see how it’s been manipulated so we see the how the varying weights are utilised is amazing. The utilisation of page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels shows off such a great eye for storytelling. Plus seeing how the panels are utilised with backgrounds is rather impressive and really gives a great scope and feel that is needed. The imagination and creativity here is beyond expectation and just puts Alex more and more into the realm of the elite.

I don’t know where in the Aspen Universe this fits, if it does at all, but I seriously want to see more of this moving forward. There is a very interesting world here to explore and it has so much untapped potential available to it. This is the power of storytelling being able to create a version of the world that is believable, interesting and within lies the kind of danger and excitement you need in your life.

Britannia Lost Eagles of Rome #3
Valiant Entertainment 2018
Written by Peter Milligan
Illustrated by Robert Gill, Juan Castro & Brian Thies

Lettered by Dave Sharpe

Using his understanding of cause and effect, human psychology, and the subconscious, Antonius now works, using his deductive skills to solve cases as the world’s first detective. These abilities are now being put to the test, as Emperor Nero has dispatched Antonius to recover three Roman standards – objects symbolizing the power of the Empire – lost in battle deep in the Germanic forest of Tottenwald. Antonius, aided by the gladiatrix Achillia, must uncover the mystery behind the disappearance of these lost relics, or risk the end of Nero’s reign and the glory of the empire…

Hands down this continues to be one of the most well conceived and thought out, executed books that is on the market today. The concept alone is incredibly well done and that we see him in this age where Rome ruled most of the known world well that just means there is plenty of places where belief’s are taken to the extreme or just unknown to us as familiarly as others. Most American’s only care about themselves and European History no matter how important to the way the world actually works is something they are all to ignorant about. So kudos for using comics to expand the mind and bring knowledge to the masses in way that’s as entertaining as it can be educational.

Peter does such a great job with the structure of the story and in creating such a nice ebb & flow as to how we see information unfold. I find the way that Peter has Antonius work and that no one else can even come close to understanding his line or thinking is one of the more fascinating aspects of the book. I mean I understand that the Eagles were “lost” in a Germanic Forrest according to all reports but really in this era where everyone plotted behind each others backs in the hopes to gain power and notoriety or become some god-like figure. So of course the Eagles aren’t going to be there they are going to be with whomever wants Nero to fail the most. Oh I feel like a Detectioner!

I am always so impressed with the interiors of this book. The attention to detail, the manipulation of the varying weights in the linework to create such subtle moments in the middle of some broad bold lines really has this massive impact on how we see the story unfold. Plus there’s also those Blue Eyes of his that pop making him the handsome man to be feared for more than his skills. There’s nudity but we never really see the bits and pieces, which is a shame if you ask me heck we’ve already seen what Bruce Wayne’s packing. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels shows off such a great eye for storytelling. The way backgrounds are utilised is sensational to me in how it expands the moment, where on Earth they are and just the sheer size and scope of the story itself.

There is just something about the mix of reality and fantasy in this that makes that much more interesting. Majority of these characters really did exist and these were the roles they played to a degree and being able to use that as base and then expand that to create a whole fictional story that envelops the time period and makes you believe in the Vestal Virgins, kind of like the Oracles, and their power. When I can actually see them having the power to sway Nero and the others but in a much different way.

This is an incredible premise that is told exceptionally well through story and characterisation where you can be transported beyond time and space to something extraordinary. Combine that with these interiors and well this is among the reasons why this is a must have, required reading book.

Aphrodite V #3
Top Cow Productions 2018
Written by Bryan Hill
Illustrated by Jeff Spokes
Lettered by Troy Peteri

Let me say something right off the bat and that’s this reads like it’s an episode of Lucifer without the whole devilish charm and personality. This comes off as some sort of investigative show that easily draws the reader in and makes them feel like a part of the story as well engaging the readers mind so that they can think along, try to put pieces together through actions. This is an incredibly strong book that really is so much more and so different from anything else we’ve seen in the Aphrodite line to date.

Bryan does such an amazing job writing this story. The way it’s structured and the ebb & flow of how the story is revealed to us creates something that we can get lost in. Aphrodite’s mission in this era is well presented and how she’s going about it and how we see what she was sent to prevent still unfolding before her and us well it’s exciting. The fact that Martin is a stubborn man, a man who runs a multi-billion dollar corporation and whose father is well apparently responsible for all this refuses to believe in any of it. The contradictory nature of being saved by Aphrodite and his resolute disbelief shows off Bryan’s skill at characterisation.

Speaking of I am beginning to like Minny more and more as well. She has this great hard shell and I am going to assume that her face tells the story as to why. I like that she comes across as this no-nonsense bitch because that just means there layers to her that we have yet to discover and that kind of thing well that’s what keeps readers coming back. Plus teaming her up with Aphrodite and the way they interact with one another well it’s has those moments of comedy that make it clear that Aphrodite hasn’t been around humans.

The confrontation with Caitlin is where the story takes a massive turn this issue. We as the reader gets to learn things more so than the characters but they learn a lot as well. I like the direction this seems to be going in and I have to wonder about a few things involving Basilisk. Aside from the fact that we all know what a Basilisk really is or is portrayed to be so I have to wonder how far is it’s reach already and whom does it have in it’s grasp. If it’s this snake like creature it’ll sliver undetected and infect instead of turn things to stone. So who is lying and who knows more than they’ll admit? I have a nice pet theory of my own and it’ll be interesting to see if it plays out anywhere near close.

I love the interiors here I think they are done incredibly well have some absolutely stunning moments and set the whole mood, tone and feel of what we need to really have that extra impact. The utilisation of page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels shows off one of the best eyes for storytelling. The manipulation of linework using varying weights, the way colour is used to either highlight, lowlight or just for impact is so well done it’s scary. The backgrounds are utilised and how it all brings the scene together or how we view the city gives a great sense of size and scope to the story.

Just the sheer fact that this isn’t a typical Aphrodite story was enough to get me excited but then add in the mission, the people involved and the entirety of what needs to be done and Bryan exceeds the already high standards he set for himself.

The Girl Who Danced With Death #2
Hard Case Crime/Titan Comics 2018
Based on the Novel Trilogy by Stieg Larsson
Written by Sylvain Runberg
Translated by Rachel Zerner
Illustrated by Belen Ortega
Lettered by Phillipe Glogowski

       THE STORY SO FAR
Lisbeth Salander's peace never lasts, and the new family she'd built for herself shattered when Trinity was kidnapped. It's not long before Hacker Republic is on the Säpo's trail, but Salander's detective skills led her to a discovery she wasn't expecting. Meanwhile, Mikael Blomkvist is investigating the rise of the fascist, racist roots behind the Swedish Republican Party. Relying on Salander's Intel risks putting his personal life on the line, but he knows the exposé – and the chance to reunite with Salander – is worth it…

This series has been absolutely amazing to read. I cannot sing the praises of Sylvain enough when it comes to his adaptation skills here. This has been so good that I went out and bought the entire series and subsequently gave to my father to read and we both loved it! So this from Titan is what the power of storytelling can do. It sparks something within the reader and moves them to read the original source material and when you find someone who do an adaptation that is so influential to a reader well that is a source you don’t want to pass up on.

The way that this is paced is stunning to me. I know these are oversized issues and that’s freakin awesome and helps with how much can be told and used in the issue. The whole thing reads like one huge action/adventure film and you have no idea what’s going to happen at any given moment except that somehow in some way Lisbeth and Blomkvist are going to come out on top. Still trying to keep up with Lisbeth’s mind is exciting and frustrating and it really rivals that of any person in comics you can think of. Honestly I think with her skills she’d give Batman a run for his money as intuitively she’s just that strong.

Also I really do enjoy this complex and complicated relationship that the two of them have. Lisbeth has a temper and when she finds something she’s like a dog with a bone and forgets manners or friendships because she is that focused on what SHE is doing. When trouble finds her and she needs help the only one she turns to is Bomkvist who lives for the chance that meeting up with her brings. The adrenalin rushes and the story that brings him more fame and notoriety. They feed off each other and then there’s the sexual tension as well which just heightens each of their experiences with one another.

I like the interiors here. Yes they are much more suited to comic books in style but there is still this fabulous degree of work to create individuality with the characters. There is some very nice manipulation of varying weights in the linework that helps to create so gorgeous work. The emotions and feelings we get from what we see is invaluable to the enjoyment of the story. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels shows off a very good solid eye for storytelling. Plus the judicious use of backgrounds is well done to me as they do such wonders expanding the story and giving the reader a sense of size and scope of the whole thing. The creativity and imagination is fun to see and that Diner to me kind of sums up how much I really enjoy what I'm seeing.

With a focus shift on a different kind of villainy that we’re used to seeing the sheer fact that we can see this kind of story published is special. No longer can anyone who’s got a deviant or subversive nature be able to hide instead we can see what kind of people they are through the clues and characterisation that we see here. The real world and the world of fiction cross lines here with a perfect example of what it means to stand up for what you believe in against those who are in positions of power and want to use that corruptly. Nike got it wrong they should’ve used Lisbeth and Blomkvist.

Little Girl #2

Little Girl #2
Devil’s Due Comics 2018
Created & Written by Pat Shand
Created & Illustrated by Olivia Pelaez
Coloured by Fran Gamboa
Lettered by Jim Campbell

      Previously in Little Girl
Now that her murder spree has begun, nothing will quell the fires of Abby May’s vengeance. As t5his tortu3ed spirit continu7es to lash out at whoever inherits a mysterious penguin toy, she finds herself pulled away fro her bouts of violence...toward a small, quiet home in Indiana.

So the opening for this issue is great and it has all kinds of that classic horror feel to it. The dog barking forcing the husband to get out of bed to see what’s up and finding wet footprints in the rug. Yeah this is what horror is when you can’t see it but somehow know it’s there. Lets not forget the dog either because we all know that animals see spirits and sense danger that we cannot so having Buzz in the house well that’s going to drive people nuts as he continues to see the presence of Abby May and I love it!

So how did she get into that house with that family? One of the best two page spreads that I have seen in some time that’s how. The pacing and the way the story goes is really well done and I love that in these two pages we get to see so much happen and it nothing feels rushed or left or any of that it has the right feel to it. There’s a scene later on that I wish had done this tactic as well because it really would have benefited from it, the days of the week are used so you’ll understand why I say that when you get to that part.

So we see how it ends up where it does but there is a stop first and I have to say I wish we’d gotten a little more about Reverend Samuel. The potential was there really delve into his already broken psyche as he’s terrorised by Abby May. Still he’s not a star of the book he’s just a device that shows us more about the Little Girl and what she’s about so what we get is pretty natural. You don’t want to spend time developing someone who isn’t gonna be around for the long haul, or do you? Regardless of your personal wishes it does advance the story and brings us a better understanding of Abby May and it’s kind of terrifying when you sit and think about it because of how she’s already behaved versus this issue.

I like the interior artwork here. There are definitely moments that impress like the aforementioned two page spread that showcase Olivia and Fran’s work. I wish the dark parts were darker, the overall tone and feel doesn’t evoke the horror as much as I'd like but then that’s me. The utilisation of page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels shows off a very good eye for storytelling. Backgrounds are utilised nicely and the visuals do have a nice way of keeping the flow of the story moving.

This is a great little story it has suspense and mystery and there’s the whole haunting aspect to contend with all of which is told extremely well. The object that Abby May has attached herself to being a conduit holding all her energies because of the trauma she’s suffered is another smart aspect of this and one that is seemingly harmless. I love Pat’s storytelling I find that with each project he manages to unlock a new aspect of what he’s capable of and seeing that is exciting. With some excellent pacing and a strong premise this is one you should be sleeping on.

While on a mission to locate political prisoners in Siberia, the Black Badge team meets another group of young operatives who call themselves the Mounties. With the mission on the line, will they be able to work with this other team or will the two teams turn on one another?

Gosh this is kind of why I love Matt and the work he does. I mean who as a kid didn’t want to be James Bond and have a license to kill? Heck in early teens I made own utility belt to use to climb trees or the shed in the back yard. Granted I never really had the fantasy to kill anyone that didn’t happen until I was an adult heh. Regardless the idea of these Scouts is what fascinates readers and so far the ambiguity of how they organisation really formed is one of the driving forces behind keeping up with the book. Matt smartly keeps that dangling like a carrot in front of the horse.

This issue things get kind of complicated but I think that’s to be expected. The new kid, god I am terrible with names we really need a scorecard with who’s who, is annoying and I think it shows perfectly because while the others are seasoned he’s with them on his first and now second mission and he’s nervous. When people get that nervous they talk, they ask questions and yes they never shut up. So through all this the characterisation is so amazing to me as we really do get to know as much about them through what they do as what they say or how they behave.

We are introduced a new Quartet of teenagers this issue. They are the wrinkle we’ve never knew we wanted and I love when that happens. Again Matt is just slaying it with the story here and while we heard about Jimmy this is the organisations response to him. It is okay I mean when you “lose” a member you get investigated to make sure the group is okay, mentally and physically, and assess if anyone else might follow suit. Standard stuff not that anyone likes that or those who do it and yes friction and personality clashes are inevitable. Every last damn thing in, of and about this story feels normal, for a group of Scouts who do missions instead of adults because no one questions a Scout group.

Tyler and Hilary’s work on the interiors here is pretty. There’s just something about it that just fits and I am sure that partly it’s because they are married but also the relationship between Tyler and Matt. That they have this relationship through some really good books already it’s easy to see how they both can think along the same lines. The way that these two can create individuality among each character is so delightful and it’s little things about each one that makes them them. Whether it’s those old school riding pants or hair styles or even where they wear their badges each person we see is unique and consistent and that’s so well done. The utilisation of page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels shows off a great eye for storytelling. While I will always say more backgrounds should be utilised it doesn’t detract from the story.

This is the kind of book that’s fun, interesting and slightly troubling and yet all of it works so perfectly together. Hell if I even remotely thought this would’ve been a Scouts life for me I would have stayed longer than a year lol. But then again this is a different kind of Scouts. So just get on board and let your inner teenage self loose and regale at the whole idea of what being a kid spy could’ve been for you!
