Now while i’m not sure why a plane is dropping something from the sky in Western Nigeria but from the bottom on if it can’t be good.  So why drop it gently and is this some new biological weapon?  Guess now that our curiosity has been piqued we’ll have to come back and find out won’t we.  Nicely done.

Then we go to Dr. Jadas Riezner and at first I thought hmm a flashback but read and you’ll understand.  I do like this though because it’s cute and not what you expect as the girl he’s with starts quoting Tea for Two not knowing where she’d heard it from.  It’s these little things that stick with you as a reader it may not seem like much but it’s like the hook of a song it’s get to you whether you realize it or not.  Though at some point you begin to see what’s really happening here and then your own understanding perks things up.

Jadas wakes up after having been drugged last issue in that underground lab where they are trying to readjust his memories.  Yeah all of a sudden everything about last issue comes flooding back through your own memories and you get a slight adrenaline rush as he runs down a darkened corridor.  However before he can even make it home and try to collect his thoughts there’s cops at his building waiting to bring him in to talk about a break-in elsewhere.

Well what happens with this is all kinds of interesting.  His Doctor and those who have been using Jadas all these years without his knowledge have really done a bang up job.  I mean what they’ve done stands up against a police investigation and makes Jadas seem well even more crazy than he sounds so that the truth will never be believed.  They’ve got him by the short hairs here and I think he’s beginning to understand that.  Though that he broke into his own property was a nice kicker and reaffirms his own beliefs.

Jadas mother picks him up from the station, I guess they had to call someone so why not her.  Partial truth comes to light through them talking and it’s nice to see that.   What happens next though really took me by surprise if his mother was willing to tell him that she raised him, loved him and was his mother in every possible way without his true birth origin then she should be protecting him.

Suddenly I’m super excited for what’s happening here.  Not necessarily a slow start it’s very detailed and very interesting but now that things are now taking a new turn that has adventure, intrigue and mystery written all over it.  It’s like a new thriller has been born and it’s science based so hopefully we’ll see and learn more about the science here as the story unfolds instead of it being just the basis of the story.

I like the interior artwork here.  There are some great standout moments like seeing the city and the water as Jadas leaves with his mother.  This is very much comic book art so no too realistic treatment going on with the people.  The department Psychologist is more generic than I was hoping for but hey that’s okay and I was kind of hoping she’d be more willing to listen to him and help in the future but…  Then there’s his mother all those lines to “age” her i’m not sure are completely necessary instead it looks like she’s scarred not and aged.  These are just what I noticed nothing that takes any enjoyment from reading this.

It’s a good story and things are definitely heating up and i’m looking forward to seeing what happens next.

Insufferable #5
IDW Publishing 2015
Written by Mark Waid
Illustrated by Peter Krause
Coloured by Nolan Woodard

Galahad’s been having a rough week. Someone’s set up a string of crimes connected to his past, and to top it all off, he’s convinced that his father, Nocturnus, is the person who killed his mother! Meanwhile, Nocturnus has been following the same trail of clues, only to return home to find his estranged son–and his son’s publicist–trapped in a net dangling from the ceiling.

Mark really has found his new niche in comics.  After Incorruptible and Irredeemable now it’s Insufferable and this new type of honest, frank and dysfunctional look at heroes and villains is something he positively shines at.  Father and son have never been at odds like this and it truly feels like what could happen when a family fights crime together.  I do like that we’ve seen the father push the son so much trying to make him better than he is and the son rebelling against that wanting to be his own person regardless of the cost.  It’s made these two seem like such immovable objects and fleshed out their characters like there’s no tomorrow.

With the opening of this issue we see that neither of them is ready or willing to trust or work with the other.  It’s a shame really as this father and son are still grieving and the incidents with their respective urns should have brought them together.

I do like that the conversation between Jarrod’s father and his publicist.  Both of them have strong feelings about how the other does their job and both of them are right and wrong.  It’s good stuff and the dialogue continues to showcase why Mark is among the very best there is.  The fact that she is a better detective than her client, Galahad, is well that shouldn’t be a surprise Jarrod has been living off more reputation than skills for years now.

I have to say that until this issue we’ve seen a master plan at work but thanks to the writing haven’t seen it at all.  Five issues in and suddenly the real story is revealed and then the obvious one starts to happen as well.  There hasn’t been a slow dull moment yet but it’s all been sleight of hand, misdirection meant to keep us looking in the wrong direction while the real story was going on elsewhere.  I love this tactic because Mark did it so well here that you never realized it.  Sure I love the father/son conflict and it’s been great to see but now things have hit a new level.

This issue’s villain is Malovolia and he’s dastardly.  While yes it seems that he’s found a perfect foil for getting away with his latest scheme, though what that is who the heck knows other than it also focuses upon their family.  I thought this was pretty funny actually as Galahad uses what he has at his disposal to delay anything happening till Nocturnus can into position.  It does however seem that even working together finally the boys are still a step behind.  I mean what was Malvolia’s endgame here just kill them while wearing his new suit?  Not likely.

Peter and Nolan working together on this series is pure gold.  They have this whole classic superhero style nailed down and it’s freakin awesome.  The facial expressions are flawless, the backgrounds are nicely detailed and the use of pages and panels show a true understanding of storytelling.

This is pure unadulterated fun.

Let me just say that the cover for this issue makes me think it’s Neil Patrick Harris standing there looking at us.  Aside from the fact it’s always a gorgeous cover and the work truly exceptional it’s just that added bonus so thanks to Benjamin Carre.

Sander came across someone needing saving last issue but he couldn’t have known that it would be Lantern City’s supreme ruler Killian Grey.  It seems that every choice Sander makes seems to be get him deeper and deeper into something he just isn’t prepared for.  Regardless he does seem rather adept at thinking on his feet and coming up with the most logical conclusion for himself.  He remains true to himself and those actions seem to be rewarded in the most unexpected of ways.  Though at this time he still doesn’t know where his own wife and child are.

I really am enjoying the way Matthew and Mairghread are telling this story.  As Sander gets deeper and deeper into his cover life and makes unexpected friends and allies while also discovering who is really his enemies things get deliciously complicated.  A lot of this issue was spent with Sander and Killian running around the underground having to work together to survive the pitfalls that face them.  The characterization and the story development really go a long way to making this one hell of an interesting read.  The premise was great but as I read each issue it seems things are evolving on the fly and that makes predicting anything near impossible.

I like the ingenuity on display as Sander thinks on his feet proving there’s more to him than meets the eye.  At first I thought he was merely a survivor taking a risk to better life for his family but as situations arise we see his mind in action.  This kind of thinking from him and his knowledge make him such a more complete character.  That he’s with Killian who is experiencing this alongside him it isn’t surprising to see how that will unfold.

We don’t see Lizel this issue but after what we saw last issue her father is doing things she is completely unaware of and that’s dangerous for her and for Sander.  I look forward to seeing if she talks to him before receiving Sander’s message about him.  Either way you know this is going to wreck some havoc somewhere and I can’t wait to see it.

His second family, Terna and Jom, should benefit from what’s going to happen next as well.  His loyalty to those around him is admirable and he’s the kind of man that you want with you.  His willingness to follow his gut and tell the truth has served him well and kept him alive when the truth needed to be hidden.  There’s really a marvelous complexity to him how he behaves.

Carlos Magno is one of the absolute best artists in the industry that you don’t know about.  His work from the first time I saw it has left an impression on me.  It’s so detailed and dramatic and full of expression it’s verve is without equal.  Not only his ability to bring the characters to life but his use of pages, panels and backgrounds are among the things that I think makes him one of my favorite artists.

This is a series that you may not know enough about but you definitely should be reading.

So if you have the correct type of phone and can download the app you can have a truly interactive experience reading this comics and it seems that this kind of collaboration could be the future for print comics.

Man has finally found a way to travel faster than light and he’s getting ready to explore a greater part of the unknown universe.  Sounds Star Trek like to me and i’m okay with that.  Any time you get a burgeoning space travel story it’s bound to draw comparisons.  Plus the in book references well that’s just priceless.  Brian is nailing this for me, he’s writing it and illustrating it and the artwork is stunning and the dialogue is illuminating.  The fact that we’ve got two characters trying out lines on what to say to the first new species they meet yeah it’s laid back and believable.

Page ten took my breath away.  The ship that will carry them further than any other before it, with the space station behind it while both orbit the Earth.  Yeah it’s an incredibly stunning and powerful visual.

If it weren’t enough that we’re getting this great look at the beginning of immense space travel, they’ve got ships have explored locally but this new technology allows them to go further than ever before and that’s exciting.  Seeing what this series will bring us in new alien species and new friends and foes it’s the kind of the stuff that excites a reader.  The unknown can be as scary as it is exciting and this issues captures that balance beautifully.  We also get to see that Commander Grissom used to be captain of the ship replaced by Captain Anderson.

Ah a woman relieved of command and she’s holding a grudge.  While it’s nothing new this is a pioneering mission it’s going to be an interesting conflict.  You can say it’s no big deal and that you understand but the demotion stings and well women hold grudges more.  Not to mention the blending of his trusted crew members with her and her crew yeah it’s going to play a pivotal role later on.  This first is a perfect set-up!

There’s drama, human interest, the unknown and some beautiful characterization alongside page after page of WOW interior artwork.  Oh plus there’s a whole thing happening here that you’ll need to read and trust me when I say it won’t surprise you very much but it will add a whole new dimension to things and the power struggle is very real.

With references, the look and feel of varied franchises Brian blends them all so that he comes up with his own version of what the depths of space has to offer.  It’s an intense read and one that demonstrates why Image is home of Imagination.

King Tiger #2 (of 4)
Dark Horse Comics 2015
Written by Randy Stradley
Illustrated by Doug Wheatley
Coloured by Rain Beredo

The mystic warrior King Tiger and his new assistant, Milo Sturges, witness a ritual mass murder of blood and fire that manifests an unthinkable obscenity from a dark universe. Tiger’s own considerable powers seem useless against the horrific leviathan, but when his and Milo’s escape is cut off by those who released the monstrosity into our world, the fact becomes clear that Tiger and Milo have blundered into a trap!

So we pick up right where we left off with Milo driving and the two being caught between the villains on one side and the summoned demon on the other.  Now there’s a reason this duo, Rand and Doug, are among my all time favorites working teams and it’s all due to the quality of the work we see.  Why do I bring that up well you’ll have to see how Tiger gets them out of this predicament to understand.

I was surprised and blown away by Randy’s writing, characterization and just the whole dang story period.  Full of the unexpected, revelations, surprises and little in jokes between characters letting them know things without alerting others to it yeah it’s all here.  The story itself is just incredibly amazing and as I kept reading it I kept thinking is this really happening?

I’ve said that Doug’s art has been phenomenal for ages and i’ve lauded it on Dark Times and once again he gets to showcase those skills and his imagination with these characters that are chasing Tiger.  Seemingly culled from all over mythology of the far east they really do create this whole creepy nightmarish scenario.  With Rain’s colouring here it becomes so much more than just your average visuals but hit that level of fascination for the reader that you just don’t want to look away.

Tiger’s origins are revealed this issue and we learn how he’s able to do his magic and where it originates from.  Forget whatever you were expecting because you won’t find that here.  Randy decided he’s going to mess everybody up and go a route that well not only explains why he’s been tight lipped about his past but about his supposed destiny as well.  This whole thing is amazing I can’t get over what these folks have brought to the table.

While Rikki is learning first hand Milo is also learning the truth from the old man.  Who by the way kind of looks like this aged version of himself.  Tiger the perfect result of a forbidden union, this can’t sit well with his siblings and it wouldn’t surprise me if they were to do this whole uprising thing against the man using them, belittling them and making them feel more than a little useless.  They are treated like they are nothing more than servants to be used as the Dragon sees fit and this treatment is usually one’s downfall but we’ll see.

Dark Horse has some of the best books out there.  With creators that may not be household names but should be they are quietly putting out some of the strongest quality material on stands right now.

Onyx #2
IDW Publishing 2015
Storytellers & Creators: Gabriel Rodriguez & Chris Ryall
Coloured by Jay Fotos

As if the prospect of the first issue wasn’t enough to get us involved and hooked into the story this issue has up the ante.  I mean wow okay so we knew the Captain wasn’t supposed to tell his people about the base and what was in it but seriously!  Okay this issue kicks butt people and this is the kind of thing that goes places you don’t suspect and that’s what makes it worth reading.  I mean an alien virus with a hunter on it’s tale plus what scientists create that interacts  with it, it doesn’t get any more bizarre.

The opening is fantastic and it really showcases the interior artwork in all it’s detail and mystery.   We never get to see this person talking just his mouth and this contraption that seems to keep him lips from closing so we only see the teeth and gums and it’s pretty creepy.  The mutants he’s with well they are kind of awesome and I like the one’s staff it’s very early man in appearance.  So whatever these things are they are prepared for the coming humans.

Back to Onyx and the soldiers she’s encountered.  Ah Loner her abilities are growing exponentially and I think the more she uses them the stronger she gets.  That headband isn’t doing much to help her control or block anything and she’s hearing a lot more than people are guessing.  Including the fact that the General plans on killing her after learning the secret of the base, which he’s completely off base about now.

Alright I adore these mutant creatures and we do learn about them, how they were created to a degree.  But really it’s the imagination required to bring them to life that’s really the standout here.  I’m particularly fond of the snake hybrid creature it’s freakin awesome and completely nightmare inspiring and yet ready to be made into a plushy.  Also of note here is the way Jay is able to blend the colouring and make these transitions in his work to really highlight what we need to take notice of.  He brings a lot to this book with what he does behind Gabriel's imagination.

So the way that the humans secret base and the alien spore story arcs are able to be fused into one cohesive story is extremely well done.  It does give a whole new meaning to strange bedfellows but in the best possible manner.  Before the captured Onyx however can be dealt with however Loner, Cap and the others show up and the big fight ensues.  The biggest and best thing that happens is that Loner gains Cici’s respect during the battle and we see more of Loner’s abilities in action.  It’s a fantastic fight sequence because it’s written and illustrated in such a way that it’s unmistakably dynamic.

Oh the way this issue ends well I am somewhat surprised, can’t say I don’t like it and the ramifications of it well you have to wonder about them.

I am already a huge supporter/fan of this book.  It’s kind of got everything including the kitchen sink thrown in so that it keeps this uniqueness and originality to it.  With no clear cut genre to stick it in they’ve created their own and well it fast becomes one of those guilty pleasures you’re not afraid to admit to.

Ninjak #7
Valiant Entertainment 2015
Written by Matt Kindt
Illustrated by Juan Jose Ryp & Backup by Stephen Segovia
Coloured by Ulises Arreola

Colin has defeated the elusive La Barbe in a mansion estate and for his next target, Sanguine, he’ll be returning to the UK.  London however, isn’t without its perils for Ninjak, and not just from the Shadow Seven.  His MI-6 handler Neville Alcott has been at his wits’ end trying to manage the cavalier Ninjak, and his patience seems primed to run out…

The main story by Juan Jose Ryp really has never looked better.  The man is an amazing artist and the life and vibrancy he brings to the page and the characters truly takes my breath away.  If he doesn’t end up staying on this book than y’all better make darn sure he gets a monthly title to call his own since he can do magic when illustrating.

Matt has me incredibly hooked with this series, I’ve always been a huge fan of Ninjak’s but this run is nothing short of brilliant.  This issue for instance focuses on his encounter with Sanguine and her story gets told so we can understand who she is and what she’s about.  Not to mention that they share similarities as well.  That this arc dealing with the Secret Seven is just as much about them as it is Ninjak is fantastic since for a change we really get to see what motivated these characters to be who they are.

Sometimes it’s easy to gloss over things and say oh hard knocks life and all that but to showcase the trauma she’s been through and chronicle her life leading up to how she became as fearsome as she is was great to see.  Matt nails her perspective and how she saw things in her life unfold and caused me to be sympathetic to her and what she’s been through.  While I may condone her lifestyle I can appreciate how she came to it and why she believes in what she does so fervently.

Damn when we get to page eleven and see the fight between them start i’m completely transported to another place.  The artwork is super strong and powerful and the dialogue/narration minimal letting us just see more of the fight.  It’s a beautiful dance interrupted with a flashback that returns to something extraordinarily creepy.   There’s a moment when the fight spills into something more public that’s brilliant in itself and gives the reader a moment of real joy.

The flashbacks to his parents and their lifestyle and the kind of man the manservant is becomes more clear and why he treats Colin the way he does.  Doesn’t make it right but at least it makes more sense.  I also really enjoy the then and now moments in this series that really go a long way into fleshing Colin out as a person.  We can understand his personality better and see how in circumstances he’s come to act in certain ways.

Neville’s ex-wife has some great advice for him, not surprisingly it’s exactly what she did with Neville.  I look forward to seeing if this handler who’s pretty much the exact same personality wise as the man he handles can come to terms with all this.

Stephen’s back-up art for this issue was perfectly done.  This experience is important for a number of reasons and once you read this it’s instantly clear.  Again as a compliment to the flashbacks in the main story we get so much characterization each issue that it seems like comics like this should have been done since the beginning.

The best, strongest series Valiant has with it’s most colourful character just keeps getting better and better.

The First Hero: Fight for your Life #2 (of 4)
Action Lab Entertainment 2015
Created & Written by Anthony Ruttgaizer

We open with a perfect example of why we don’t use cell phones while driving.  This guy who thinks he’s tougher than he is crashes into a building and all the profits he was taking from the fight well that’s in the wind and being snatched up by bystanders.  Though his feelings about extrahumans is clearly evident and they are the new persecuted people, forget women, blacks or gays they are the new “target.”

Then we head back to the arena fight.  This is when Jake knows Cooper’s predicament and pulls him aside and the whole how much conversation happens.  That’s a helluva sum too people wow and it’s not wonder that Cooper’s seen as a joke and why they’ll start taking it out on his family if he don’t start coughing up more money.  I mean he really thought he could count on Jake to bail him out too and that made me laugh because Jake isn’t crazy and he’s definitely a changed man from the one who hung with this crew.

Jake might not be crazy but he’s not helping Cooper out and that means Odinson is called in to teach someone a lesson.  While trying to do the smart thing and suss out information on Odinson and his powerset and psychosis his inexperience shows when he is forced to actually fight him.  Yeah Jake is ex-army people and getting hit by a three armed fighter, former MMA most likely, means his own anger issues will bubble to the surface and suddenly everyone there knows his little secret.

Well how does Cooper react to all this well it’s incredibly telling.  When he’s not snorting coke up his nose he’s trash talking Jake calling him less than human and other things that aren’t so nice of a lifelong friend.

I like Sergeant Alvarez and how he views this but not so much Colonel Kirkson.  He’s too by the book I act and think as I’m told military guy.  When did eliminating people come before curing people as a priority for the American Government?  I realize overpopulation is a problem but there’s got to be a better way to handle this than automatic slaughter of an extrahuman, after all not all are crazy and direct threats to the general population.

Back to the confrontation between Jake and Cooper.  This takes up a chunk of time here and it’s damn well done.  The personality we see emerge from Cooper is really something else, spoiled cut off rich kid who refuses to grow up and remove that silver spoon has now been given a new lease on  life and will ruin his friends life and family to get what he wants.  Now Jake has a whole new set of problems to contend with and this part is his own fault.

So what’s next for Jake and how’s he gonna get himself out of this mess he finds himself in is anyone, except Anthony’s, guess.

I have to say I enjoyed the story in the back about Raymond Rowe and how he inspired Odinson though I do have to admit that there’s something about that early photo of the clean cut kid just starting out that I wanna see more of.

Action Lab really does have some of the more unique and interesting takes on stories out there right now.  The emerging presence of extrahumans and what they represent and how people who viewed differently are perceived well it’s done exceptionally well.

Harrow County #5
Dark Horse Comics 2015
Written by Cullen Bunn
Illustrated & Lettered by Tyler Crook

Well now that Emmy has discovered the truth about herself it seems that the scary has gone away.  I have to say Cullen hasn’t wasted much time in transition between her old life and her new one.  Then of course there was the woman we saw last issue as well and learning who she is and what role she’ll play remains to be seen.

There’s a part of me that loves seeing father and daughter getting along so well as if they’ve finally connected and have that whole family thing going.  Then of course part of me has to wonder if this is an illusion something she’s forced after her declaration.  Is her father really this caring man who raised Emmy all these years or is he nothing more than a construct in need of control.

Even the bodiless skin that now seems to talk freely to Emmy doesn’t creep me out anymore.  Since her self discovery and her very forceful speech it seems there is less to think of creepy and i’m kind of sad about that.  The skin is like a protector for her though she honestly she doesn’t need one.  There to warn, comfort and ultimately remind her of who she is and there’s both comfort and danger in that.

Emmy’s service to the townsfolk in dealing with the Haints may not be what they want but it’s what they are getting.  She’s definitely not Hester and has more compassion and understanding with these creatures than she does the people, then again that does sound pretty much just like Hester so perhaps she’s not as different as she’d like to believe.

Of course this is a different time than when Hester lived and the townsfolk that she created have had their own free will making them just as human as can be.  Complete as we see with jealousy and hatred towards each other.  This raises questions about her state of mind and just what she’s truly capable of to me when dealing with these folks.

It really is a transition issue as we see become more comfortable with her new life and trying to make amends and smooth things over with all the people and creatures who inhabit the town.  The creepiness of not knowing has been replaced by something else here and it’s not quite anxiety but maybe uncertainty as if she may not be able to pull this off but is still trying.

One of the best talks she has is with Bernice.  She raises the question we’ve been wondering if her Grandfather was someone Hester dreamed up what does that make her?  A whole new set of questions to explore and a world to truly discover await us as we continue to be mesmerized by the way Tyler brings this world to life.  Cullen may have switched gears on us but the intrigue remains in new and exciting fashion.  Plus the last page well yeah that’s another great twist and explains one thing.

I love that the book is evolving, changing and becoming so much more.  It’s still fascinating and a lovely look at something that shouldn’t exist.  Doors close others open keeping us moving along guessing and thinking and that’s what a good story does.

Bloodstrike #2
Image Comics 2015
Written & Illustrated by Rob Liefeld

After the rather interesting opening we had last issue this one opens with Professor Night being held captive by this young woman.  Oh I have to say that this opening was pretty spectacular!  The language and the fighting and the subterfuge not to mention that Rob manages to throw a few unforeseen twists and wow okay now I need to know what’ happening next.  For new readers this is a wonderful introduction to Professor Night and what he can do while also introducing us to his rather unique opponent and she’s well yeah not what I expected and that’s a huge bonus.

So back to our hero missing his junk and wanting it back.  In the subterranean depths beneath the Toshida estate in Tokyo, Japan a fight rages on.  Mercenaries hijacking the signal that rendered him disavowed so they hope to capture him for a nice paycheck don’t stand a chance against a member of the Bloodstrike team.  Though you have to give it up for the dialogue and art here because it’s rather humorous and a nice jab at one of Marvel’s most prolific characters right now.

To see the remainder of the issue and how our intrepid misunderstood hero fares you’ll have to read it.  What I do find interesting is that regardless if a character is killed in combat they seem to have the technology at their disposal to be brought back time and time again.  So if you defeat someone by shooting them literally to pieces you can find yourself up against them again later seeking some payback.

It doesn’t hurt that Cabbot doesn’t like Bella and her cohorts either.  He sees them as sell-outs and traitors, taking their enhanced powers and selling them to the highest bidder of the private sector.  Either way you look at it both sides are incredibly ruthless, vulgar and honestly fun to see in action.  There’s something much more aggressive about the way Rob’s writing this series and it is decidedly not for younger readers.

Well this is Rob doing what he loves so you know the characters have their shoulder pads, belts and pouches that’s just going to be staples of some outfits.  Otherwise I like seeing his evolution as an artist and seeing the body proportions so nicely done and some of the faces and facial expressions are really impressive.  I would like to see more motion in their movements so it’s not as freeze framed but more fluid but that’s a personal thing from me.

The end of this part of the story would normally be a shocker but after seeing how he gained his arms and legs back it’s just a wow moment not a OMG moment.

The last part of the issue brings us Blackstrike back to life.  Out of hibernation or awake from status his target is Cabbot and he’s to exterminate them with extreme prejudice to maintain the integrity of the program.  Okay love the updated costume it’s sleek and hella tight.  I look forward to seeing him go after the boys now.

This is a nice fun, solid book full of violence and adult language and it hits all it’s notes perfectly.
