Rom vs Transformers #2

Starscream forges an unholy pact with the Dire Wraiths—and Bumblebee and Ultra Magnus are hot on his trail. Unfortunately for them, Rom and the Solstar Knights don't know the difference between Autobots and Decepticons—and they're ready to fight all comers!

Picking up where we left off last issue in the midst of a confrontation between Decepticons, Autobots and the Solstar Knights will have to wait while we get some more background information to see how exactly it got to this.  If there’s one thing I can say it’s that both John and Christos not only have a passion for this universe but both are exceptional writers in their own right and together blow me out of the water.  The flow of the story is amazing, the structure of the book is fantastic and the characterisation is superb.

The guys really do an incredible job here mixing in the background information, how exactly the Dire Wraith and the Decepticon’s managed a team-up, with the action that’s encountered along with long standing prejudices.  Before all this I never thought of Autobots as having bigotry and prejudices and here they are on full display and it adds a whole new dimension to the characters that actually make them more interesting.  This kind of personality depth is something i’m not used to when it comes to them so suddenly i’m sitting up and becoming more interested in what’s going on.

Alex and Josh are killing it on the interiors here.  The attention to detail and the sheer amount of work we see in every panel brings the fantasy to life in ways that make you feel like a kid again.  It’s got that perfect blend of being seen as realistic and yet it’s got that colourform colours that make it so childhood.  The use of page layouts are great and angles and perspective that we see being used really makes this easy and fun to follow.

I love how we’re seeing the relationship between the Solstar Knights and the Autobots that seems to encompass the entirety of their mistrust for each other coming to the forefront in one story.  That Stardrive is a Decepticon raised by the Knights to become one and her loyalty to the Knights is stronger than to her own kind is the perfect catalyst for bringing us this kind of intense and action packed arc.

Bumblebee being one of the few characters whom I’m actually familiar with, well aside from Rom, fits into this nicely.  He’s a mainstay character who is usually in the supporting role so to see him as a youngster and open minded type who looks, sees and questions what’s going on around him gives him that validity to his being more the kind of sentient being that we can care about and support, get behind.

It’s amazing the level of talent on display in this Hasbro Universe.  That it can come from cartoons and a toy line to be such an incredible story based adventure is wonderful to see.

It’s funny I can already see this on the big screen or perhaps as an original movie event on one of the cable stations, IFC would be a good fit.  It may not be written to be that but it’s that quality about it.  There’s an inherent interest factor in the way they are writing this that makes you envision it on that huge screen even when holding it in your hands, it’s that trick of the mind that allows that for me.

The characterisation here is phenomenally well done.  I mean Captain Penn is one  you want to and are supposed to hate and he makes it so easy.  His son was a monster and he knew it and didn’t do anything about it so he got what he deserved last issue.  Now the Captain makes it crystal clear what he is, what he’s about and what he’s going to do and none of it is pretty or even legal.  Unfortunately this kind of abuse of power is all too common in not just the police, look at #45, and yet as cliche as it is it still works perfectly.

I like the interior artwork here.  While there’s a lot of darkness in what we see the linework isn’t overly heavy and that makes a huge impact on how we see this.  His use of page layouts and how he uses angles and perspective show a good solid eye for storytelling.  The utilisation of backgrounds and the attention brought to bear here is nicely done.  Plus Eli’s eyes are a moment in this story I wasn’t expecting and somehow captures an essence beautifully.

Speaking of Eli it’s nice to see outside characters being brought in.  That Eli is who he is and knows what his sister is capable of and willing to not only look the other way knowing what she’s going to do but offers to do it for her well has this whole unexpected characterisation that can only come from such a meeting between Eli and Greta.

With Captain Penn hellbent on getting Dominique in jail for the murder of his son, so hellbent he’s willing to go outside the law to ensure she pays, the girls have little time to do what needs doing.  Though I have to say Greta surprised me today and throughout the entire issue as she comes to life in a way that’s both scary as hell as well her finally getting past the events that sidelined her and got into that house.   We are learning more about her than I was anticipating and I have to say she’s one badass kind of bitch.  Hard to believe she found herself abused by her Ex.

This is all kinds of magnificent.  It’s got the drama we need, the revenge factor that we crave and the characters and characterisation that bring the soap opera quality.  The blend is masterfully put together so that it all flows as smooth as silk.  There’s also plenty of intrigue here and in different ways, we can guess what’s going to happen based on established patterns and as a reader we want to see if we’re right then of course there’s intrigue in who’s going to crack or make it work, yes Captain Penn’s attempt at the weakest link.

Boom! Shouldn’t surprise anyone anymore with the quality of stories they bring to the table.  Solid, fun and kinda hellbent crazy this thoroughly entertains.

Generation Gone #2

So last issue we were introduced to a trio of teens who are at different places in life and yet have come together to hack into a place so they can transfer funds into an account of their own making.  Yes they are stealing and one of them needs it for, well I want to altruistic reasons but let’s face it stealing is stealing and these kids aren’t necessarily bad but perfect examples of this generation.  I want what I want and I’ll just take it, we’re raising kids who don’t know how to think for themselves who feel entitled to anything they want and don’t understand the value of hard work, okay so maybe i’m projecting a tad but that’s how I see it.
So while they were trying to hack the place they in return were the ones being hacked.  Akio infected them with something that came through the computers and it gave them superpowers in a way that seems like something out of a horror movie.  I gotta say it was a most impressive display too!

This issue picks up shortly after the last one ends.  Elena is off in the sky seeing how far she can fly and the boys are on the ground trying to figure their own powers out.  I like this because the way Ales presents it is so accurate to me.  Elena with a phone to her ear talking to the boys below while flying is so now.  Reception issue be damned right lol.  They are kids and they act like it and the characterisation is so strong and on point.

Akio and the General however is where the real story is at.  These two men are proud and determined individuals.  It’s almost like watching two male lions fighting to be leader of the pride only through words, veiled threats and underhanded knowledge of each other’s lives.  One could say it’s like a chess match where they keep using their words to gain the upper hand, either way this is where we learn more about the why it happened and again how Ales has approached telling this story is amazing.  He’s not doing things traditionally and I like it, it’s through the banter, hidden behind words and threats that we actually learn what’s going on.

Andre’s work on the interiors here continues to impress.  The faces are something I just can’t get enough of they are so individual and expressive that they do so much to help expand the story.  The use of page layouts is nicely done, the no border look is something I absolutely adore seeing.  The angles, perspective and the utilisation of backgrounds here really do wonders for the flow of the story as well as give us that broader look at this world.

One of the things that always draws me to what Ales is doing is that he’s so cerebral.  I’m never sure if i’m seeing what he wants me to see or if it’s just me interpreting it my as I read it.  You have to think here, see the bigger picture as much as the smaller one.  From clues about Baldwin and his ability and what he’s hiding here to Nick who is trouble with a captial T.   He’s a loose cannon ready to go off, the proverbial volatile youth and Elena is head over heels for the boy who doesn’t want her anymore.   So while they are being used and manipulated without their knowledge we get to see in somewhat real time how they are dealing with everything life is throwing at them and that is huge.  All of it is meant to make you think, see beyond what is one the page and make you question things.  He’s really very good at that and I love that about him it’s why I continue to read what writes.

Jem and The Holograms #2
Infinite Part 3

Written by Kelly Thompson

With the Misfits off to explore the world outside the wall, Jerrica and the girls follow Techrat in search of the only person who can truly help them defeat the seemingly evil JemCorp—a man they never thought they’d see again—their father…

While this may be a crossover it’s like two separate stories going on simultaneously both of which originated from the same point in time, or action as the case may be.  I’m hoping that with what we learn this issue that we’ll see a Jem and The Holograms on stage with the Misfits having some sort of sing-off, see battle of the bands, on this world and drive everyone crazy while it’s being freed from Jemcorps control.

I have to admit it’s stories like this get be me going and keep my interest more.  I’ll admit that I wasn’t that big a fan of the cartoon--those were the years when I started working after school and having that first chance to explore life on your own.  Doesn’t mean I wasn’t aware of it I just don’t remember it well.  That being said that they have a mission here and have to use their brains and skills to accomplish some amazing feat that’s what I like.  Show us there are more to the girls than instruments and fashion that they are smart, powerful and can literally do anything they set their mind to.

The interiors here are cute right off the bat I will say i’m disappointed in the use of backgrounds here.  They are on this crazy alternate reality earth and each panel should showcase that instead of relying upon just colours.  It’s an opportunity to really show off some creativity and imagination here so it should be used because when we see what this world has it’s pretty special.  I love the outfits we see they are great the use of pages through layouts, angles and perspective are nicely done.

The time we spend with Eric and his mysterious guest, benefactor, prisoner take your pick there has really expanded the story nicely.  His time here gave us a really good look at what the girls are going to be up against, he is fleshed completely as a character and a man and it’s extremely interesting to see how thoroughly amoral and ruthless he truly is.  That versus the light and hope the girls, yes even the Misfits, represents is one of those wonderful things to see.

I’m always impressed with the Jem books, regardless of which one it is.  The writing is smart, intelligent, sassy and entertaining.  It’s got a nice positive message to it that comes through but doesn’t hit you over the head.  It’s pretty gosh darn all-ages and has the right atmosphere so that one set will see it one way and the other will catch a little more it’s got that blend to it that really appeals to such a wide range audience.

Jem and the Holograms, and The Misfits, is something you shouldn’t be sleeping on it’s one of all around stronger books on stands today.

Van Helsing vs. The Werewolf #2
Zenescope Entertainment 2017
Written by Chuck Dixon
Illustrated by Allan Otero

Lettered by Taylor Esposito of Ghost Glyph Studio

Liesel Van Helsing is the daughter of the famed vampire slayer Abraham Van Helsing. As both a genius inventor and a skilled hunter, she has taken on Dracula, Frankenstein, even the Mummy of Amun-Ra and survived. Now, her next battle begins against one of the deadliest of supernatural hunters to exist, The Werewolf.

I do have one question hasn’t Liesel met Britney?  We all know werewolves exist in this world and for them to dismiss them as not existing is weird.  While this is just the next installment of her meeting the legendary monsters of the movies and this werewolf is much different than we’ve seen still they all should know they exist after all Liesel knows Yeti’s exist.

Alright so aside from that I love that Chuck can absolutely anything known to mankind.  His take on this is fun, interesting and makes Liesel into something so much than just a monster hunter.  We’re seeing her given new skills and attitude that puts her on par with some of the greatest action/adventure stars around.  She’s had all these gadgets and gizmos when she was introduced and that we see her using them, her fighting skills and her knowledge in the way we see it her makes me thankful that she’s still growing, evolving and finding new ways to entertain us.

Allan does some really nice work on the interiors here.  From the snow covered mountains to the Monks and the monsters there’s a cinematic quality to this that is utterly delightful.  The way he’s laid out the pages has a great feel to it and the angles, perspective and utilisation of backgrounds here take what we see close to breathtaking.

Liesel has always been a fascinating character and seeing what Chuck is doing with her here makes me extremely excited for what’s to come.  This is what I’ve been wanting and Pat was going in that direction and now Chuck is fulfilling it.  This is some sharp writing and characterisation that puts Liesel on course to be a fighter, detective and all around one of the most varied and potentially dangerous women on the planet.

So the introduction of her guide and seeing Agent Wu again is fantastic.  I like the Chuck is kind of not necessarily expanding Liesel’s world but those she is finding she can rely on.  Yes Agent Wu and she will have this kind of adversarial frenemy thing going on but they seem to meet in the midst of something dire and will have to team up just to get out of it.  The dynamic here can change on a dime and that feeling of expect the unexpected is delicious.  That guessing game we as readers play is the kind of stuff we live for, it’s a love hate thing but we nonetheless want it.

This is what we want to see from these characters.  Growth, evolution and the kind of shattering excitement in the adventures that push them to their limits and we see more of what they are made of!

Bettie Page #2
Dynamite Entertainment 2017
Written by David Avallone

Lettered by Taylor Esposito

People can be forgiven for thinking they know all there is to know about Bettie Mae Page. She was, after all, a public figure, in every sense of the term. Even so, Ms. Page kept much of her life private, and with good reason.  Recently, a secret diary was discovered hidden among her possessions. Its contents were well known to the Federal Government, though they had remained highly classified since 1951. In the present day, the Bureau felt that sufficient time had
passed, and that Ms. Page’s service to her nation, indeed, to the world, could now be revealed. Despite Mr. Avallone’s questionable reputation, he was chosen to adapt this diary to the form you hold in your hands. It is our hope that with this, the heroism of Ms. Page can be appropriately enshrined the hearts of her fellow countrymen.
COL. L. MCKNIGHT, SPECIAL AGENT, (RET.)

I’ll be honest I never understood people’s fascination with Bettie.  I mean I know she a cult icon longer than a national icon and I’ve known people who went out their way to get things with her image on them back in the day, okay the eighties, and I never understood it.  However I do know who she is and what she represents and honestly what David is doing here is rather spectacular.  It’s the perfect blend of kitsch and that whole what if, whatever happened to and the whole finally unearthed angle.  It’s fun, infectious and all around a bright spot in this current mood of despair and anger in the United States anyway.

I love the characterisation here and that goes along with the whole story at hand as well.  I mean Bettie was taken to California “on the lamb” as it were and suddenly she’s gone from secretary to B-Movie star.  Rick Chaplain is a perfect foil character for Bettie here.  He’s charming, handsome, mysterious and he’s the kind of adventurous that revs Bettie’s engine the right way.  Plus he did rescue her from being tied up and whatever that was all about and he’s digging into the why of it.  Meanwhile we’re learning more about him too as the story progresses and I have to say these two make a killer pair!

Colton and company do some great work on the interiors here.  I love the look of the city that they bring to life as they drive around.  The creativity of the costumes and the B-Movie set and stuff is great as well as the fashions of the day that we see.  There’s a lot going on that most folks won’t notice but really make an impact on the story and it’s nice to see this level of attention to detail in the book.  Plus it’s just fun to look at!  The linework is beautifully done and the faces, body proportions and the expressions that the characters give off reflect what’s happening in the story perfectly.

There’s this great sense of action and adventure here that Bettie seems to have stumbled into completely by accident.  There’s a charm to the way David is writing this and how the story is structured has that ebb & flow to it that brings you up and down like you are on a wooden roller coaster.

I may not have been a Bettie fan, or fanatic, growing up but these folks are making me one today!

Nightwing The New Order #1 (of 6)
DC Comics 2017
Written by Kyle Higgins

I’ll be honest I wasn’t going to really read this or review it after speed reading it at the shoppe.  Then someone said how good it was and I thought okay let me go back and do a more thorough reading of it.   Also let’s face it Kyle is an amazing writer and Trevor a stellar artist so really the combination of these two men yeah.  I am however of two minds for this story and we’ll go through that here.

The concept of this story is one that is strong and well done.  I like the idea of someone so trusted in the superhero community going to a dark place like this.  We don’t see what motivates him to get to this point but the event that happens to open up the book is dramatic and will cause you to read further.

So in the future a mature and greying Dick Grayson still tries to maintain his youthful vanity with that horrific hair style.  So after that little snide remark let’s get into why I just said that.  Dick Grayson of all people isn’t one I see doing this and i’m having a hard time in my mind being able to reconcile my idea of him and this reality of him.  Someone who wasn’t a great hero I could see doing this more readily, a minor character brought to the spotlight for that action taken would’ve been more believable for me.

Then again using someone like Dick Grayson whose image while not always squeaky clean is still one that seeing this drastic a change is a strong motivator for wanting to know exactly why!  It’s a nice flip of the character that we know and love and one that fans will either love or hate there will be no in-between for this one.  Also his past relationship with a superheroine makes this doubly weird for me but also makes the dichotomy of his actions and new beliefs to another level.

Love the work Trevor does here though I mean wow!  The attention to detail throughout is amazing to see and especially in the backgrounds because that really fleshes out the world around them.  The use of page layouts and the angles and perspective being used is great to see.  He does such a marvelous job bringing this to life and making it as exciting as it is and that’s a mighty impressive feat.

Aside from the switch in Dick’s thinking, that’s still a mystery to be solved, the narration we get throughout is nicely done and gives an inside look at his son as well as acquaint us about how life is now.  Kyle makes this intriguing and fascinating and kind of infuriating all at the same time and yet the concept around it is something that after reading this first issue you want to know more about.  The moment that solidifies what this book means is when Dick and Alfred talk at the dinner table.

This is already off to a better and much stronger start than the mess that is Metal.  I think that this is DC’s better “event” of the year.

The Hard Place #1
Image Comics 2017
Written by Doug Wagner

After five years in prison, AJ Gurney, a legendary wheelman in Detroit, has decided it’s time to go straight. He returns home to work in his father’s garage and disappear into anonymity. But during a visit to the bank, AJ is recognized by two violent bank robbers, and they demand AJ be their getaway driver. To ensure his compliance, they take a young female hostage; unfortunately, she happens to be the daughter of a Russian crime lord. AJ now finds himself pursued by a bitter police department and hunted by every asset of the Russian mob. Without a doubt, he’s in a very hard place.

I like this a lot more than I thought I would.  I’ll say this right off the bat i’m not Nic’s biggest fan but the story is so damn engaging and AJ is a superb character to see on the page that I found myself overlooking the fact that i’m not a fan of this style of artwork.

Doug’s writing here is the best I personally seen from him and I’m a huge fan of the work he did with I.C.E..   From the moment we meet AJ it’s very clear that he is genuinely wanting to start a new life, free from the trappings of his old one and has learned his lesson and will atone for his sins.   His interactions with people, friends and family really stress the point too that he’s a changed man.  The fact that Doug can so thoroughly create, introduce and get the reader to not only get to know a man but to FEEL for him like this is something special.

Nic isn’t a bad artist so don’t get me wrong when I say i’m not a fan.  There’s a lot of heavy black here, from the linework to pages itself and for me it has this incredible heavy feel to it that doesn’t gel with me.  Though I will say his attention to detail is nicely done i’d like to see more work on the backgrounds because they add to the story.  His use page layouts with their angles and perspective are nicely done, he has a good eye for storytelling.  I will also say i’m impressed with the tattoo work we see on the characters that a nice subtle touch.  Though c’mon her titty but not his ass please.

I like the structure of this book.  The way the characters are introduced, how we see AJ’s past and what happened so that he’s where he is now is exceptionally well done.  Seeing and meeting Maksim was actually as powerful as it could be and let us know pretty much everything we need to know about him moving forward.  Also that this isn’t the only time we’ll be seeing him which is nice.  Don, the cop, his best friend and his father flesh out AJ’s life nicely as well.  Seriously the way we see who is important to his life and how he wants to be well it’s some of the strongest first issue writing i’ve seen.

The ending for this issue beautifully demonstrates not only Doug’s ability to weave a tale but how AJ’s not going to be able to escape his past.  What we’ll see next issue will really determine how his life will go from here and I’m already fully invested in the story for the next four issues.

Masterfully written with heart and soul this is going to be one of the year’s best stories!

Incidentals #1
Catalyst Prime/Lion Forge 2017

One year after The Event that transformed a small portion of the world’s population into superhumans, billionaire Bo Vincent Chen has gathered his team of enhanced operatives for secret missions. Their latest task: saving the life of the extraordinary teenager called Seven. The world’s first mysterious superteam of the Catalyst Prime Universe is revealed in this new series, but what secrets are they all hiding?

The Catalyst Prime universe continues to grow and expand in the right way.  The event, the meteors that gave folks superhuman abilities, has cause a global upheaval and that’s clearly evident in some titles.  Also as this is so new to the world many are still undecided about what to do about these people and on the opposite side of that is the government/military wanting to capture and probably kill/dissect/study them and use them for their own purposes.   I used to think that the government stuff was a tad stereotypical or cliche but as I’ve gotten older I’ve realized that this is more true an aspect than I’d like to admit.

Joe’s doing a fantastic job in making the sheer amount and diversity of powers that we see believable.  I’ve had a similar idea myself in why the Earth would have people gain powers so for me this is the closest I’ll ever get to seeing that become reality.  It also makes me terribly excited to see how this year is going to progress.  This issue sets the tone for an entire universe and whether or not Joe meant to do that, I’m guessing he did, it has the right feel to it.  Yes we are in a society filled with company crossovers but they feel forced and trite, this by contrast feels like it’s the beginning of how this universe should be built.

Larry and company do some solid work on the interiors here.  It has this very unique superhero feel to it that really feels dynamic to me.  The linework is interesting to see and how the faces are drawn capture your attention and you look at each person with a scrutiny we don’t normally find.  The way page layouts are done and the use of angles and perspective are nicely done so that the story flows throughout the issue.  I’m a firm believer in backgrounds and we really should see more of them in use here, when we do seed them it’s so much better for the larger picture.

Joe and company, Catalyst Prime and Lion Forge have found a way to create a new universe full of superpowered beings from the ground up and have feel like it has all the potential to rival what the big two have.  I really am enjoying the tone, mood and feel we are getting here and the way it flows, the structure of what we see is fantastic.  The way characters are introduced and how the characterisation is among the best i’ve ever seen.

The thing about this issue that impressed me the most is that two teams are forming in this book and both seem to be for the same or at least similar reasons.  So will there be a team of villains that will come from this or will the two separate teams find a way to merge into one?  Either way this is off to a helluva start and I'm definitely in for the long haul.

Well this is something the world definitely needs right now!  Set in 1998 featuring a young woman crushing on her coworker in a Record Shop that’s an all-girl joint!  It’s got the right blend of characters, see personalities, and just enough of both extreme fiction and normal teenage life to make it that all-ages book that’s easily relatable to.  Doesn’t matter if you are a boy or girl the crush feeling is universal as is the feeling of being a fish out of water at times.

So while the Fight Club part of the title is more than a little out there though at this time kind of all the rage it’s just a part of what this series is about.  Also the twist put on it is great and I really think that it has some potential for something extraordinarily interesting to come out of it, at least from a characterisation standpoint.  However this issue is really about getting to know the characters who inhabit this world and how they know each other.

I’m pretty impressed with the pacing and structure of the story here.  The flow of the issue is really good and the strength of the storytelling, see how natural it feels as you read it, took me a little by surprise.  Which is usually the case when i’m encountering someone’s work for the first time.   I mean it too because this really is super cute, easy to find someone to relate to and has all this awe of innocence of being young carefree and finding yourself a part of something you’d never dare dream of.

I really like the interiors here!  The linework is spectacular in my humble opinion, how the weight of it is used whether light or hard.  There’s some wonderful attention to detail here I wasn’t expecting to see in an all-ages book.  Let’s face it for some reason all-ages usually equates to simpler in terms of the interiors.  The way pages are laid out with the use of angles, perspective and the pick and choose of the backgrounds, every panel should be filled up to really showcase the mood, tone and feel of what’s happening, showcase a nice eye for storytelling.

The dialogue and character interaction throughout the issue are great.  It’s got the kind of feeling you’d expect actually out of a John Hughes Eighties movie.  Granted these girls, women, are tougher and more modern in the sense of how they dress are seen and the beginning of what we see today.  There really is something endearing about the book that just kind of captures a moment and simply makes you smile.

Also I expect to see more of a mystery to solve, the disappearance of Rosie, as well as what the basement is all about as the story progresses.  This is off to a fantastic start it captures the reader’s imagination and doesn’t let go.
