Vengeance of Vampirella #6
Dynamite Entertainment 2019
Written by Thomas Sniegoski
Illustrated by Roberto Castro
Coloured by Omi Remalante Jr.
lettered by Troy Peteri

Still recovering from her recent resurrection, and near fatal injuries sustained from her battle with Hemorrhage, Vampirella remembers a mission which threatened her humanity, and aroused the blood-thirsty creature that she could be if she did not remain in control. Why has a primordial jungle begun to grow, and spread around the small town of Belaine, Virginia? And what world threatening horrors does it contain? The Danse Macabre wants to know and has sent Vampirella to find out.

God I love this series! I may be a late comer to the world of Vampirella but as the saying goes better late than never, right. Where Tom is taking this is something that I am thoroughly lost in, and as we see so many elements of a future where the world is as it is I am over the moon with excitement. This really does appeal to such a wide array of audiences that it's impossible not to find some aspect of what we are seeing here that is right up your alley. Plus it really is exciting and fun to read.

I am a fan of the way that this is being told. The way we see the situations and circumstances arise through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented beautifully. The way that this is structured and the way that the story glides through the pages is fantastic. The character development here is phenomenal as well and what we see Vampirella, in particular, go through changes them immensely and it is this kind of gripping and quite frankly hardcore characterisation that makes Thomas the kind of writer we always want to read. The pacing that we see is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way keeps us engaged and invested in the story. The way all this works together to create the books ebb & flow is flawlessly accomplished.

There are occasions when a character is shall we say popular where they end up in multiple titles. Sometimes this is overkill or pure marketing for more money from readers. Companies think we're not all that intelligent but we are, we see when it happens and know what's being done. Vampirella for me is different she has so many different facets to her and can be in so many different genre's despite her vampiristic lineage perhaps because of it. What Thomas is bringing to the table here utilises her to her fullest and it couldn't be any better.

The interiors here go beyond stellar into the whole mindbogglingly great stratosphere. The linework is incredible and how the varying weights are utilised to bring out this level of attention to detail blows me away. The sheer amount of creativity and imagination that we see on display here is astounding. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and panels show such an amazing eye for storytelling. The way that we see backgrounds being utilised and how they bring us this depth perceptions, sense of scale and that overall feeling of size and scope to the book is stupendous. The colour work we see as well is really extraordinary. The way we see the myriad of hues and tones within the colours utilised to create this quality of shading, highlights and shadow work is exquisitely rendered. The imagery that we see here and how it creates the environment for the story as well as helps the reader become immersed through feelings and emotions the work creates.

Dynamite has some incredibly talented people working on their books and this one checks all the boxes for me when it comes to top of the reading pile.

Clockwork Furnace vol.1

Clockwork Furnace vol. 1
Markosia 2019
By Ian Duerden

It is 1784 in the Age of Enlightenment and these are the chronicles of the Society of Incredible Exploits. In the small hamlet of Grimsthorpe ancient and deadly forces are being released. Squire Sebastian Flint, a supporter of the newly discovered power of steam, and his brother Lord Lucien Flint, a champion of clockwork mechanisms, must solve the mystery of the Devil’s Bell, the myth of the Immortal Peddler and uncover a dark secret that has laid dormant for a thousand years in the heart of Deepdale Wood.

I really do love Markosia as they find these magnificent stories that need to be told. This is something that feels familiar or at least the premise does, and yet completely unique and different. It captures the readers' imagination in some really astonishingly beautiful ways that you don't expect but find incredibly alluring. Markosia doesn't get the coverage or love it deserves here in the states and that's a shame to me because I am telling you all the best stories come out of these small publishing houses and you really ought to start seeking them out.

I love the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold is extremely well done. This is full volume and while it hits at somewhere around 100 and something pages the way chapters are utilised it brilliantly done. This is my introduction to Ian and his work and I have to say that I am hoping not to miss anything else he's working on. The character development that we see is sensational and it is interesting to see the first impressions either held up or changed throughout the course of the book. The way we see the circumstances and situations they encounter and how they act and react to them help show us what they are made of and it's great stuff. The pacing here is amazing and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way it works with everything else to create the books ebb & flow while highlighting the books structure.

The interiors here are a little more unique and I rather seeing them. It is obviously computer generated and while the effect is sensational it does almost have the feeling of a form of Cel's or colourforms but elevated. The benefits of this are huge though because the ship in the water on the first page is not something easily rendered by hand at least not in the way that we see it here. I love seeing how the characters are being brought to life and the clothing they are are being rendered with one exception. There is one panel showing Sebastian with no pants on and his shirt doesn't look right and he's got camel toe instead of the outline of his member, this is only time nothing feels right about what we see. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a marvellous eye for storytelling. The colour work is beautiful as well. The hues and tones we see within the colours are sensational and the face that they utilise colours you don't think about in how we see the shading, highlights and shadow work is mindbogglingly good.

The story is strong, interesting and takes a familiar premise and makes it feel fresh and brand spanking new again. The layers within the story and how that is brought to life through the various encounters or reasoning's is really well done. There is so much to see and learn here and it's captivating, engaging and just pure damn fun! These are the kind of books I WANT in my life and chances are you will to.

John Constantine Hellblazer #5
DC Comics Black Label 2019

Illustrated by Matías Bergara

John Constantine has just been named the One True Magelord of All England. Please pray for England.

John is one of my all-time favourite characters in comics. His you're all twats and wankers attitude hiding his own insecurity has endeared him to me in ways that touch my soul. He's that one enigma that can never solved and yet keeps us fascinated to no end. Also through myriad of reboots that DC has done he's been kind of consistent in how he's portrayed which makes him unique in the DCU. I will not tell a lie, Simon writing this is like crack to me, I simply cannot get enough and cannot wait for my next fix. Side note I have never been a person hooked on crack I just imagine that that fits.

The way that this is being told is utterly bloody brilliant in my humble opinion. In this day and age to see the way this issue opens up and of course John's second thought after wondering what he was sleeping on well yeah I want to see more of this. Let John get drunk off his arse and wake up in men's beds more often or heck a male love interest that would be something. The story & plot development that we see here is amazing in how we see the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information. There is this pure unique quality to John that Simon understands and it works it's way into the writing of the story and the characters as it moves forward. Which leads me to the character development we are seeing. I love the character development we see here and how they continue to grow with the situations and circumstances they encounter. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages we see how it all works together to create the books ebb & flow.

With the introduction of new characters, new destinies and all the sundry things that come with that well it all continues to build and grow this amazing cast of characters that expand John Constantine's world and universe. I am enamoured with this in ways I wasn't expecting and then I find myself wanting to go deeper and deeper into England's mystic realm.

Honestly I looked at the interiors and I thought that this was a little off and then I turned the page and saw Tommy Willowtree and I understood Matais' mindset and choice. This is beautiful work and the way that pages are constructed with the utilisation of the page layouts and the backgrounds which provide depth perception, scale and the overall sense of size and scope for the book. The linework is exquisite and the varying weights help us see the attention to detail that's needed it just all works so incredibly well. The colour is beyond beautiful with the way we see the various hues and tones within the colours showing us this eye which knows how colour works and how to make the most of its range. Together this mindbogglingly good work that keeps this whole sense of a magical reality.

This a dream come true really. John is running around being himself and the creative team isn't being held to some archaic standard of what they can and cannot show him doing. Though nudity is something they won't do unfortunately and in this day and age that's a shame. I wouldn't mind finding out just how much John has to offer. Regardless this is one of if not the best book DC has right now and it's a pure joy to read.

Wailing Blade #3
ComixTribe 2019
Written by Rich Douek
Coloured by Chris Sotomayor
Lettered by Taylor Esposito

If you thought the Wailing Blade was deadly, wait until you see the Wrack Hammer! Time runs short as the Bonebreaker arrives in Ordz, claiming her right to kill Auros, the bandit king. Can Tychon save his father from not one, but TWO executioners? It's time for a knock-down, drag-out fight between two of the deadliest weapons in the universe!

This is such a good book and I am glad that I finally have the chance to sit down to read and review this issue. I love ComixTribe and how they dare to be different with not only the option, see genres, but the diversity that we see in their books. I love that this is both serious and poking fun at some of what we've seen in comics over the years, that sword for example. I love that it has elements of Thundarr the Barbarian with some added technology, see science that appears like magic, to just a little extra punch. This has so many different elements to it and how it's told has this classic feeling to it that resonates with readers.

I love the way that this is being told. How see the story & plot development through the sequence of events unfolding as well as how the reader learns information is presented extremely well. That we really do a lot of learning alongside the characters is something I appreciate as it helps us become more of the story by not knowing ahead of them. The character development is phenomenal and over the course of the arc thus far we keep seeing them grow and evolve and become who they are most likely meant to be, until the next event they face. The pacing is superb and the way that we see it take us through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way as it helps create the books ebb & flow is fantastic. The way this is structured and how Rich is able to tell this story adding layer sand sub-plots along the way not only keeps the readers' mind engaged but it also showcases some mighty fine talent as well.

There is a unique blending or mix of genres that we see here and it really does make the mind work overtime trying to pigeon hole into something other than what it is. It is unique, without like, equal or parallel. This is a sensational title that is being told extremely well and for me at least this comes at no surprise since it is from ComixTribe.

I am rather enjoying the interior artwork here. The linework is great and how we see the varying weights utilised to bring us the attention to detail that we see is well rendered. Joe's style here is really well utilised in how we see the characters and how they come to life. There is this almost caricature element to what we see with these exaggerated faces and features that makes this a lot more happy feeling than it is. Personally I would like to see more utilisation of backgrounds, because when we do see them they do wonders in creating depth perception, scale and this all around sense of size and scope to the book. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a strong, talented eye for storytelling. The colour work is fabulous and I am a fan of the way that the fire casts light and shadows is beautifully done. I like how we see the hues and tones within the colours utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work. It shows some really good understanding of how colour works and how it should work.

The characters we see and meet and watch continually grow and change with each turn of the page is what I love the most here. Folks do not trust one another and for good reason, however, I think the blade itself is changing Tychon and I am looking forward to seeing how this plays out for us. This is a strong, interesting and engaging book and I want this to last for years.

Cold Dead Hands #1 Advance Review

Cold Dead Hands #1 Advance Review
Source Point Press 2020
Written by Garrett Gunn
Illustrated by Lee Milewski
Lettered by Justin Birch

Aspiring mercenary, Kit Kelso, comes wrist-to-wrist with the deadliest hands in history.

Oh yeah if you aren't familiar with Garrett and his writing you need to find the opportunity to introduce yourself to it. The man has a nice way with words, at least on paper, and the sheer raw talent, ability and creativity with him is exciting to see. From what I see right off the bat this is a mature audiences title just from the language and violence we see and considering the subject matter and the chosen profession of young Kit Kelso it's only natural. So if you want to read a story with some truly out of the box thinking then this is something you'll have to make sure your shop is going to have.

The more I read this more intrigued I became and that is precisely what it is supposed to do. Start off with an eye catching moment and work our way to why that is occurring and then following things from there. The way we see the books structure is fantastic and the tools of the trade are here and subtly show us it's building blocks. The idea behind the story and how we see this and how we meet the characters is done superbly. You literally cannot get enough and you want more kind of immediately because suddenly you've been thrust into a world that is intriguing, fascinating and in frank honesty full of characters you want to know and or be.

The way that this is being told is exceptionally well done. The story & plot development here as seen through how the sequence of events unfold and how the reader learns information pulls you in, gets your imagination fired up and thoroughly engages you in what's happening. The character development is phenomenal and I like that the whole tough guy routine is thrown out the window, okay the stereotype Goodfellas is anyway, and instead we see these men as real folks who have a job to do and then talk about mundane stuff. This allows the reader to be able to relate to them in some context or another. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way we see how the story unfolds and how everything works together to create this near perfect ebb & flow to the story.

The interiors here are cute. The linework is interesting and it's thick and there isn't too much attention to detail but there is this certain charm and charisma to it that I find endearing. It wouldn't surprise me either if a few characters were based on this creative team either. I am also impressed with the way we see imagery in the backgrounds. The warehouse for example and the shadows that fall across the floor from the moonlight outside is sensationally well rendered. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a superb eye for storytelling. The way that we see this even without the utilisation of backgrounds, which I want to see more of and think we need to see more of, we still get this nice sense of depth perception, scale and that overall sense of size and scope to the book. The colour work is pretty. The colour choices are sensational and the way we see the various hues and tones with the colours create the shading, highlights and shadow work through colour blocking is exceptional stuff.

I love this already and I cannot wait to get my hands on a physical copy. Seeing the events occur how they do and seeing how things are coped with will surely entertain you. This is unlike anything you've ever read before and that is a feat unto itself as this kind of originality is harder and harder to find. Once again Source Point Press proves they are among the top houses for amazing storytelling.

Belle: Oath of Thorns #5
Zenescope Entertainment 2019
Written by Dave Franchini

The truth is revealed! After the shocking ending of last issue, all the cards are on the table. Mel, Candlestick and Alex are in trouble and Belle must hurry if she hopes to save the lives of those she loves most. Be sure not to miss the penultimate chapter in this pulse-pounding series!

If y'all don't think that this is a pure super-hero style book then you are definitely not reading it because what I am seeing here is the launch of a heroine who with her support team are amazing to follow. The way that Dave is writing this is utterly amazing and how he's managed to sneak in some surprise layering has me gobsmacked! That I hadn't seen this coming or playing out the way that it has is something we don't see much these days and to find a book, a story or a writer who can do this is one that you follow forever. I don't say this lightly but it is a fact that I am going to be following Dave's career and not miss anything he's doing because he has the charm, uniqueness and charisma that shines through his work well yeah.

I am thoroughly impressed with the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well. I am enjoy how both threads are being woven so that they will become one and how Belle is experiencing her own demons in ways she never thought she would. Which leads me to the character development that we see here. I am enjoying seeing how the range of emotions that each of the characters are demonstrating. The way this is done is for maximum effect on the characters and thus it gets transferred to the reader in a flawless way. The pacing here is excellent and the way it takes on this journey weaving through the twists and turns, maybe a few revelations along the way. Everything we see works in concert to create the ebb & flow of the book and highlights how it's structured.

I am completely in love with the interiors here. The linework is truly exquisite and how we see the varying weights being utilised to bring out this amazing attention to detail is marvellous. We see so much in the linework here and the way we see the lips in close up with their creases blows me away. Seeing sharks and other marine life through the windows is beautifully done to give us that sense of where they are. I would like to see backgrounds being utilised to make us feel more enclosed or in something that's underwater which we're missing. Also I wish we didn't have so many coloured backgrounds in the chopper because that too is a great opportunity for that cramped quarters feeling to shine. Don't get me wrong what these are are suggestions and only that because the work really is mindbogglingly good. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show this incredibly amazing eye for storytelling. The colour work is gorgeous and how the hues and tones within the colours are utilised to showcase the shading, highlights and shadow work is beyond what we hope for. The shine on metal, the sepia tones in the back stories I mean these are what make a good colourist excellent.

There is nothing about this book that isn't sensationally well done. The writing, the layers we see in this, the characters and characterisation as well as they twists, turns and showing of true colours I mean dame. Then to have this level and quality of artwork as well as the lettering I mean this is what we live for in comics and you aren't going to find anything that's better.

Gun: Fighting Is My Monday #1
Reckless Eyeballs 2015
Written & Illustrated by Jack Foster
Lettered by Greg Sorkin

    Fighting is my Monday
Remember when you were a kid and you thought you were going to be a rock star?  Arena shows. Champagne. Thousands of people chanting your name... your life was going to be one long limo ride. Then you wake up one day and you're 30 and the limo never came. It's like that only I never wanted to be a rock star...
I wanted to take over the world...
Amateur bad guy, Trevor Werner, the sinister Mister Twist enters an uneasy alliance with two fellow criminal also-rans: bruised, beautiful Olive Armstrong and aging 60's super-radical, Agent Orange when the trio stumble upon the passed out body of a left-for-dead superhero. The plan is simple: ransom the hero at an underworld 'black auction' and split the take three ways. Of course, like all simple plans it goes murderously awry...

Oh I don't know why I waited so long to sit down and read this, though I am guessing a busy schedule with new release books and conventions might have played a part. Regardless here we are now and it's time to get to business. I have to say that I really enjoyed reading this. The concept is fantastic and the way that Jack moves us through the issue through how we see the sequence of events unfold and how the reader learns information really highlights the story and plot development here. With this level of writing and storytelling I am surprised this is the first thing I have read from Jack but then again I cannot wait to read more. The character development is great and I like that we see how these characters are already inherently flawed and broken and yet circumstances being what they are force them into old habits. The way they act and react to the situations and circumstances really flesh out who they are and it's utterly delightful. The pacing is incredible and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way while working with everything aforementioned to create the books overall ebb & flow is sensational.

I am literally head over heels impressed with this issue. I found myself captivated from the start and as the story continues and we're pulled deeper and deeper in we become engaged as much as we are enthralled by the turn of events that occur. I like the point of view we see here, from the characters standpoint, is not unique but it is told in way that makes it feel fresh and new from what we have seen elsewhere.

The interiors are beautifully rendered. Hand painted makes a huge difference when we see how they are able to show the various hues and tones within the colours to create the shading, highlights, shadow work and mood or after effects, like smoking wafting, is mindbogglingly good. The linework is great and how we see the varying weights bring out this attention to detail is pretty damn sharp as well. Though watch the hands, make sure fingers are legible or knuckles at least and even through the flesh tones make some separations. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a marvellous eye for storytelling. All around that Jack does the writing and the interiors make me give him mad respect and I love that we see exactly what we should and what's intended.

Strangers coming together to pull a job, not friends, not enemies (at least not yet) mere acquaintances, can they work together to pull off this job or will their natural nature take over. Well you are going to have to read this find out but suffice to say that once you start you won't wanna stop!

Amalgama: Space Zombie #3

First there was Alien. Then there was Predator. Amalgama’s not quite as lethal as those two… but she’s a whole lot sexier! The latest Danger Doll universe breakout hit series continues here. Don’t miss out!!

I am still not sure how I became a fan of this character. I mean this isn't exactly what gay boys dream about or anything. And yet here we are and I am totally entranced by this character and what she is going through as well as how she is represented. This time around with some form of amnesia and three voices in her head she has found herself a place to rest and bathe. So I will say this, while she bathes and how the other storyline is intertwined it some damn fine storytelling for sure. I doesn't matter who you are or what kind of person you are this will find a way into your heart and soul as you see and learn about this amalgamation of three women and see her journey.

I like that we get to see more different or shall we say new aliens as well here. There is a charm in the characteristics that we see and some with visuals as well a with words that makes them endearing in this weird kind of way. I am never sure if I should root for them or for Amalgama but either way it is delight that these new characters pop up. It is almost a shame that the are never bound to stay for long, if what the past is any indication of the future.

The way that this is being told is really exceptionally well done. The story & plot development we see through how we see the sequence of events unfold as well how the reader learns information is presented beautifully. The there and here, plus some background information thrown in for good measure and all of this is handled with aplomb. The character development we see here is marvellous as the personalities emerge and continue to enthral. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way and how everything works together to create the books ebb & flow is some amazing work.

The interiors here continue to impress me. While I don't really go for the whole naked woman thing it is done rather tastefully so that is a huge plus in my book. Seeing her bathe and how the linework works with the colours to really hide or mask much of it well it's impressive to see. The way that the varying weights are being utilised to bring out the attention to detail is nicely done. The way that we see backgrounds being utilised and how they work within the composition of the panels to bring us depth perception, a sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the book is rather quite good. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show an extremely solid, talented eye for storytelling. The creativity and imagination we see on the pages is fantastic. The colour is extremely solid and how the varying hues and tones within the colours are utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is beautifully done.

There is one more factor in how I see this book that really makes me happy and that's the fact that I am engaged in this book in such a way that I hadn't thought was going to happen. So yeah if you think from looking at the cover alone you know what this is going to be I can tell you with 100% certainty that you're wrong. Right now is the perfect time to check it out and hopefully you'll see a side to this that makes you want to see so much more.

Nancy Drew: The Death of Nancy Drew #1 Advance Review
Dynamite Entertainment 2020
Written by Anthony Del Col
Illustrated by Joe Eisma
Coloured by Salvatore Aiala
Lettered by Crank!

Teen detectives Frank and Joe Hardy have investigated many crimes in their lives, but nothing that hits this close to home. Their best friend died mysteriously after taking down a major crime organisation. They must put together the clues to uncover the truth about this shocking crime, but the clues lead them to a stunningly unexpected direction!

First of all I am a huge fan of Anthony's writing almost as much as I am a fan of these three teen sleuth's. Them the Bobbsey Twins and The Three Investigators were what I grew up reading, which ultimately led me to comics and the Teen Titans, Legion and New Mutants in particular. So to see this issue and to read it based on the title alone I knew I was going to be in for one hell of a read. What I wasn't prepared for is exactly what this read was actually going to be like. From the get go we see this through a very interesting and unique lens or point of view. All I can say at this point is that there is one surprise after another straight up to the last page.

The way that this is being told is sensational to see. The story & plot development we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is impeccably rendered. The character development we see blows me away, Light Lass powers blow me away, and to see them maintain this throughout and then to be allowed into Joe's personal thoughts this way really did a number on my emotions. The pacing is superb and the way it navigates us through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way does a number on the mind. Then there is how all this works together to create the books ebb & flow and also highlights the books structure is really well done.

Throughout this whole issue, which I urge you to ensure your store will have this for your when they reopen, I was taken aback many times, many many times as Blanche would say. All I could think of is what was the ramifications of what we were being told were. That my mind is engaged from page one panel one is no small feat my friends and that it's last that way straight up until the last page is even more of a feat. I thought I would be able to handle the emotions of seeing a character so beloved by me being deceased and nope I didn't handle of this well at all. So kudos, Bravissimo and I doth my cap to you all for this.

Now the interiors here from Joe are probably the best thing I have ever seen him do. His signature style is there but somehow the crispness of the linework and the attention to detail through the varying weights feels all the more elevated here. Plus the emotion he is able to provide emitting from the characters and how that makes the reader feel, wow. Also I am digging the way we see backgrounds and how they work within the composition of the panels and provide depth perception, scale and that overall sense of size and scope. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show his magnificent eye for storytelling. The colour work we see is fantastic as well. I love the darker mood tones and yet we see still see the hues and tones within these muted colours create the shading, highlights and shadow work. All around this work is pretty damn impressive.

I have wanted to talk about so much more but given that this isn't out yet as it would've been out on the first I wanted to truly run a spoiler free review. The writing, the layering within the story and how just amazingly well written this is from start to finish has me truly excited for the rest of the run.

Who is Lady Zorro? Like an avenging phantom, Lady Zorro haunts the arid wastes of the southern California desert, defiantly fighting against the tyrannical forces of the Spanish Empire, but how did she come to be a revered, legendary figure in Native American folklore? In an all-new take on the Zorro mythos, we'll learn those answers and more in this special, one-shot tale of supernatural adventure that introduces you to a Lady Zorro we have never before seen! A secret cabal of Spanish Army soldiers who call themselves "The Pr digo" are using stolen, Native American magic to power their reign of terror over the native inhabitants of Alta California, and no one but Lady Zorro stands in their way. But will her incredible, acrobatic and sword skills be enough to stem the slaughter, led by the hideous, transformed Father Serra, who wields dark magic and commands an army of monstrous, demon coyotes? It's an all-new Lady Zorro for an all-new generation of readers!

I liked this story a lot. I think that it spins out of a previous arc makes a lot of sense considering what it was we saw there. Then to have her take up the mantle in his name and carry on a tradition of helping those who need it gives her life new meaning and that is quite evident as we see throughout these pages. The way that this is being told is great because it's not just a gender swap it's done with purpose and as an homage which if you've followed the latest arcs you'll understand why. Pat does this with some really great respect and I am thoroughly enjoying how we see the introduction of her as she moves through the pages.

The way this is being told is really extremely thoughtful and well rendered. The story & plot development we see through how the sequence of events unfold and how the reader learns information is presented beautifully. The opening is dramatic, intense and thoroughly entertaining while it seems more than a tad bit confusing. Odd and supposedly ceremonial in a way well you'll have to see it really engages the reader in strong way. This leads me into the character development we see here. I really like the way that we get to know these people. While the situations and circumstances find them revealing more about them by how they act and react there are also some very quiet times where we get the opportunity for those little things that say volumes. The pacing is great and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way it helps to create the books ebb & flow.

The interiors here are really to see. The linework is strong and interesting and how the varying weights are utilised to bring out the attention to detail is extremely well done. Our Friar or Padre or whatever he's supposed to be has this really nice hairy body which is something we don't see a lot of any more and I wish we would. The way we see backgrounds being utilised and how the work within the composition in the panels bring us a nice sense of scale, depth perception, the utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show this really good, solid and strong eye for storytelling. I am also really appreciating the way that we see the colour work here as well. The various hues and tones we see within the colours utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is rendered extremely well.

This is the start of something exciting. The way that this has about is so organic and so natural that it just feels right. We've barely begun and while she may have found a new identity to hide behind she's still that same frightened young woman who lost her brother and saw things that should have been impossible. So I will be interested in seeing how her personal growth and development works alongside her new persona. Shops will not be closed forever so you are going to want to contact your store and let them know you'll want this when it comes out.
