Monster World #3

Written by Steve Niles & Philip Kim

This has been the biggest surprise for me personally.  I have always enjoyed Steve’s stories but his collaboration with Philip here takes things to new heights.  I have to admit that the whole concept of using this era to tell a legitimate monster story has been wonderful then this issue goes that extra mile and really fleshes this world out in ways that are simply amazing.  Who would have thought that such a thing were possible even more that old time movie monsters could make a comeback in such an new and original way?

After the events of last issue where Hank and Buck encountered the creatures proving to both men that there’s more out there than they bargained for I thought things couldn’t get any weirder.  Maybe as I get older I have learned to appreciate a lot more than I used to and seeing the war of 1918 and young Hank’s experiences in the war as a seventeen year old speaks volumes about him.  This kind of characterization and development is the kind of stuff I expect and yet don’t at the same time.  As the story goes forward you begin to see more and more why this segment is as important as it is and how the guys are able to weave a story with such intricacy into something that you just don’t expect.

I am a huge fan of the fact that Barrymore is a private dick of old and the way this all started out has that old school crime noir feel.  It just felt like this was something unique in a throwback to days gone by.  Then suddenly things happen to expand everything we know and change the direction of the story.  The background information we get on Hank isn’t the only thing that’s of importance here.  There’s a larger picture going on that surpases a movie company and the death’s of people associate with it.  That this has been delivered in such a way where it all happens to go suddenly off what we expect is why it’s so darn good.

Piotr’s interiors here are so amazing.  I love that he’s able to not only capture the time period, I miss everyone dressing to leave the house even in a ratty suit to showcase your class standing.  Then the studio where the Egyptian theme just shines from a darkened page or the war itself where things happened in way that was dare I say more gentlemanly it all comes across through his work in the best possible way.

The end of the story ties everything together from what we’ve seen so far through this issue.  I cannot wait to see how things play out next issue as Hank proves that there really is more to him than meets the eye.  He may be an old school private dick but he’s also the hero here and he’s a much deeper person than the stereotype we’re seeing.  The characterization evolution here is more than I could have hoped for and leaves me hoping these guys will be keeping this world alive and well for some time to come.

Cry Havoc #3
Image Comics 2016
Written by Simon Spurrier
Illustrated by Ryan Kelly
Ink Assists by Barbara Guttman
Coloured by Nick Filardi-London
    Lee Loughridge-the Red Place
    Matt Wilson-Afghanistan
Lettered by Simon Bowland

...IN LONDON Louise Canton was tormented by monstrous transformations ...IN AFGHANISTAN she travelled with other shapeshifters to trace a fiend like herself ...IN THE RED PLACE she’s the captive of the rogue monstress she came to kill

This is one of those incredibly good, weird and must read, pay attention and absorb in order to follow stories.  I’ve never seen a supernatural creature type story like this and Simon really goes that extra mile in making seem as believable and interesting as possible.  Who would have thought A. these creatures exist and B. that they would be utilized by governments in their operations to not only participate in wars but go after their own kind to stop them from becoming major power players on the world stage.

The way we see Lou’s journey from discovery to hardened and disillusioned soldier is one that is as complex as the concept surrounding it.  I don’t know how he can keep each of her personality progression as pure as he does flipping around the timeline this way.

In the Red it’s kind of intense to see where Lou finds herself.  I mean while it does say hey they’ve been captured and are at the mercy of the woman they were sent after what we see here is utterly amazing.  From her crazy, yes I think she’s cuckoo for cocoa puffs, captures escapades to the idea of what she’s created and the fate of some of those she came with it’s really that Bam right off the bat to grab, by the collar, and keep you riveted.

The Afghanistan part is interesting for a number of reasons.  I want to learn more about this group of characters and where they come from and what they can do.  There’s enough seriousness of the situation of what they see and are doing but woven into that is some great humour, yeah that whole thing with the Viking playing with himself.  This is the section that I really want to explore more it has incredible potential and with this cast of such diverse people i’m thoroughly intrigued.

Okay coming to grips with her new reality and not trusting her girlfriend enough to tell her the truth that’s illuminating but at the same time the most predictable.  It is nice that she’s a scared little girl in all this and so lost and confused by what’s happening then the Afghanistan shows her becoming more confident but here she’s really this whiny unmotivated little thing.

The interior artwork is consistently amazing to see.  From the different colouring from different folks in each segment manages to somehow change the atmosphere of the work.  With the creativity and style Ryan brings and his use of pages and panels the work is just as important to believing the story as the words themselves.

This an amazing universe full of interesting characters, possibilities and scenarios you’d never think to encounter.

Oh, Hell #1
Overground Comics 2016
Written by G. Wassil
Illustrated by Dave Hamann

We all know how I feel about small press books and it seems lately more and more are popping up with really good, strong, interesting and well done books.  The industry has grown by leaps and bounds and the quality of this book, and this company, cannot be ignored.  I love the premise and the way we are introduced to this world.  From a man finding a baby girl in a dumpster to seeing her in her teenage years well it makes you think.

We’ve seen kids around and think wow they were born bad.  Not just acting out for attention or because of deeper issues but just bad kids who don’t seem to fit in, are violent or overly strange.  As loathe as we are to admit it they do exist but what I love about this here is that Wassil comes up with an explanation for why they are this way.  Well I see it as a reason it may or may not be but they are definitely worthy of someone’s attention.

Zoel is a young lady with an attitude, she’s also the one from the dumpster.  I recognize the remorse in her words in order to placate the parents she’s with, I’m guessing adopted or foster.  When that doesn’t work she’s herself and she’s a complicated young woman that’s for sure.  She looks like the kind who acts out before finding herself but I have a feeling that as the story progresses we’ll see she’s a bad seed.  Under the guise of being sent to boarding school she finds herself with a whole “freshmen” class.

There’s only one small thing that’s been left out and that’s exactly where this Academy is located.  Seems to me this is a school for those habitual offenders, which ironically I would consider most kids today who can’t function normally in society since parents rights to punish their children were taken away.  From all walks of life and some may be bad while others are more likely feeling alone and confused with no one to guide them and i’m sure the class will be whittled down some, if not then hello nurse this is going to be more interesting than I imagined.

Oh the whole concept here is utterly fascinating.  You’ve got to read this to understand my attraction, which you’ll hopefully share, to the fact that unbeknownst to these kids their lives were predestined.  I guess I want to know if fundamentally speaking there’s a little good in everyone or are some such lost causes they can be written off?  The writing, characterization and what we are introduced to here has me instantly hooked in wanting to see how this is going to play out.  While not introduced to a whole lot of the students we don’t need to be there’s a definite cast structure, like any high school, in play and friends and enemies in play and it should be fun to see how they have to deal with each other.

I’m also a digging the interiors here too.  The individuality of each kid whether they have dialogue or not shines through.  Also Zoel has this look that i’m drawn to and as it seems she’s the focus that’s a good thing.  The way Dave has this story flow through pages and panels is fantastic and showcases real talent.

Step away from the ordinary and help yourself to something fun, different and full of potential.

Elasticator #1 (of 8)
Scout Comics & Entertainment 2016
Written by A.C. Medina
Illustrated by Kevin Shah

Lettered by Micah Myers

In this neo-crime epic, we follow The Elasticator (aka Mikey Mazzagatti)  as he tells us his story of life in Brooklyn during the height of the recession.  With a city on its knees and organized crime working alongside the government, Mikey must push past his own troubles towards a greater good.  Mixing equal parts humor and grit, Mikey goes from outcast to a neighborhood icon. Mikey pulls no punches as he tells a story of regret, hardship, and second chances

I liked this first issue a whole lot.  This isn’t like anything i’ve read before and that’s a huge draw.  If you are wondering from the get go Mikey, the Elasticator, has been arrested and is taken into police custody.  So a man with abilities allows himself to be taken and it’s in the interrogation room where he tells them and us the story of how he came to be there.  This is a prime example of how a small press company can put out such a good, strong and unique book that should be read.  With a lot of people out there becoming more disillusioned by the “big two” and all their crazy events and reboots it’s books like this one that stands out.

So the two detectives who are questioning Mikey are interesting characters.  As they sit there and listen to the story unfold it’s abundantly clear who is there to listen and believe and who is there because they have to be.  Not fully listening or caring about the circumstances that made Mikey who he is while understandable for a cop is a bit cliche.  Though the way A.C. is writing it it’s perfectly natural for him to feel this way and it does serve to highlight a few things for me.

We need to see what and how the recession really affected the people of Brooklyn.  It’s a four year span between the time he moved here till he was arrested and in that short amount of time we see just how far a section of the city can fall.  Still who is responsible and how can local law enforcement have been so ineffective in keeping things from getting to this point are things that we will see as this story goes forward.  I like how the clues are being laid out and the players in this story have been introduced.  Yes there are still plenty of gaps that need filling in and to suppose answers now would be a mistake.  I like that part too because to see things clearly before it’s told means the story is predictable and this is far from it.

Already we are seeing some great characterization and a direction for characters to go and it’s kind of exciting.  I’m looking forward to seeing Mikey grow into a man and how his actions dictate who he becomes.  While I see potential in at least one detective for understanding and guidance in a way that I hope to see.  So in just the first issue we get it all, a story worth reading, strong characters and characterization and potential for what’s to come.  It’s a great start.

Kevin and Ross do a wonderful job with the interiors as well.  We see how much things have changed in the city from the then and now segments and it’s a nice way to highlight how far the area has fallen.  There’s a great blend of styles here to make this feel unique and interesting allowing for nice detail while staying very comic book/cartoon imagery.

This really is a stand out first issue and the start of something unique and interesting that demands to be read.

Alright I am absolutely thrilled by this series so far.  For new readers this is an excellent example of character building, development and characterization for long time fans it’s like a refresher course setting up the character for a modern setting.  With our world full of instant gratification this series doesn’t give that instead it’s doing things in a way that really gets you into the mind of Sykes, how he ticks and what he’s about before shoving him in a costume.  It really is some of the best character development writing we’ve seen and that it takes it’s time doesn’t bother me at all and honestly I wish more people would write like this.

So that Sykes has these multiple personalities is one of those things that opens up the kind and amount of characterization we get.  This issue opens with some of that on display and honestly I’d love to see more of this one as it’s pretty much the direct opposite of the Badger and yeah i’d kind of like to see this personality in bed with a lover.  I do like that he’s in this institution and he befriends Thorndyke.  Ah yes this is what i’m talking about here the dialogue, characterization of Hamilton Thorndyke just adds something incredibly good to the mix here that continues to flesh out the story.

So as the story plays out we learn a lot about Hamilton Thorndyke.  It’s basically something of an origin story for him and that involves him telling this to Sykes and Dr. Fields well it really goes to show that you can write a great interesting and thrilling story that doesn’t have to involve the man in tights beating the you know what out someone.  His story is also one that just reinforces why I love comics because you can take a character insert him, or her, retroactively into history and weave it so that it seems completely credible.  Not to mention his greatest shall we say adversary is Rasputin, though he has gone by many names, just adds to the interest factor here.

As incredible as you find his story, which also weaves in the Vikings finding North America long before anyone else, and as much you want to scoff at what he says it’s Dr. Fields who is there to do that for you.  She’s easily relatable to and is seems to be the voice of reason here and will definitely need to be convinced of the validity of what is said.  It’s going to be one hell of an interesting ride I can guarantee that even more after we learn who is Hamilton’s biggest rival.  That while shocking is also one of those moments you realize the genius behind the writing as it would tend to explain so much in the real world.

The interiors here are simply perfect.  The style and attention to detail just make me happy as it feels very much like a comic book should.  The page and panel layouts are incredibly effective at keeping the flow of the story moving.  Then the facial expressions and even the difference in body language for Sykes different personas make it easy to see, follow and understand what’s going on.  Then there’s the glory of the last page of the story that just wows and makes your eyes pop with anticipation of what’s to come.

This my friends needs to be on your list of monthly books.  Everything old is new again and this has never been better!

Wayward #14
Image Comics 2014
Written by Jim Zub
Illustrated by Steven Cummings
Coloured by Tamra Bonvillain

Lettered by Marshall Dillon
Back Matter by Zack Davisson

Manipulated by the Tsuchigumo, their spiders allies, Rori and her friends attacked a gathering of kitsune warriors at the Tokyo Tower.  At the climax of their battle a massive supernatural fire destroyed the kitsune and was witnessed by hundreds of innocent bystanders.

These folks may not exactly be household names but they’ve very quietly amassed a body of work that is not only interesting but stunning in it’s scope.  Not only has this been thrilling in the way the characters behave, are manipulated and try to find their way in this new world but it’s also a history lesson of a very old culture mostly unknown by the Western World.  This issue opens with what I see the world is like today, this need to be connected to devices with instantaneous information thrown at us constantly.  We are less concerned with the past, the beauty of nature or really the world around us instead it’s devices that people both connect and disconnect them from the real world that take precedence.

I love the dichotomy between Segawa and Nurarihyon as the new god and the old one walk and talk side by side which illuminates their differences.  This is the kind of writing and characterization that makes a good book a stellar read.  Meanwhile we also see Rori’s father again as Dermot is being held because his daughter is a suspected domestic terrorist.  At first I wondered about the mixing of their cultures and it finally hit me this issue what we see how perfectly tied together they are.

For those who don’t realize it the Celtic Gods of old are as influential and as powerful of those of Japan for their people.  Also it’s home of the Druids, magic using weavers in their own right so that it didn’t dawn on me the connection between the two till now is shameful on my part.  However it demonstrates Jim’s writing ability to keep that they're in your face without revealing it till it’s important to the story.

I’m in such awe of what Steven and Tamra can do here.  These pages have consistently been amazing but they’ve just been getting more intricate, detailed and beautiful with each passing issue.  The majesty of these creatures don’t fight their fearsome visage the balance struck is amazing.  Then there’s just the people, average everyday ordinary people who emote and tell a story through their posture and facial expressions.  Plus the eye Steven has for page and panel layouts to keep the story flowing the way they do just adds so much to the mix.  I mean the two page spread is storytelling without words and it’s strong and powerful.

The events of this issue will lead to the final arc in the story and set up the next one and from the looks of things this rollercoaster ride isn’t stopping, slowing down or getting any less thrilling.  This is the perfect blend of culture’s old and new in a battle to survive and thrive.

Assassin's Creed Templars #1

Assassin’s Creed Templars #1
Titan Comics 2016
Written by Fred Van Lente
Illustrated by Dennis Calero
Lettered by Richard Starkings & Comicrafts Jimmy Betancourt

The Order of the Templars has sought the betterment of humanity for centuries, guiding it through wars and peace, famines and feasts. But corruption can weaken even the strongest of citadels, and for the Templars to maintain order, they need a paragon of justice, honor and fealty... They need the Black Cross…

So with the success of the main Assassin’s Creed title this for me was a no brainer.  When I realized Fred was writing this I got excited, I mean have you been reading his other work lately HELLO.  Then reading the story I found myself fascinated by what was transpiring.  I had wanted to start at the beginning and see how the Templar’s were created but now i’m thrilled that we’re getting this as it is.  There’s something inherently fascinating by putting the setting as 1927 London.  It almost has this feel of what I saw in Downton Abbey.

If things are what they seem then the Black Cross is a character I look forward to learning more about.  Also what better way for him to operate too.  Dennis does this amazing job of bringing the club, the city and the clothes all to life in such a way that is pretty mesmerizing.  Plus I love the use of panels to showcase what’s happening.  Also the way the Black Cross takes his first victim has all the remnants of a horror movie and the kind of stuff that utilizes items found then and used in unique ways.

So I’m guessing we’ll see how the Black Cross goes about cleaning up the corruption of those in the order if this issue is any indication.  I think that tactic in itself is hugely attractive to me here.  An order meant to guide, protect and lead ends up becoming what it fears the most so in order to get back on track a cleansing has to take place.  So hopefully as this continues we’ll see more of what they are meant to be and if they can back to that or if the kids in the main series are facing the result of that not happening as planned.

I like how things go this issue as the ramifications of the actions that open this issue play out.  While I am getting something of a Shadow vibe from a few aspects there’s this whole mystery man feel permeating the whole book.  From a mysterious mission undertaken without knowing exactly what he’s doing Darius has become this immensely attractive character to me.  Not only because he’s classic tall, dark and handsome--think classic Hollywood good looks but because of how he finds himself now.

The mix of characters whose motives seem shadowy will be revealed in the course of the story but for now it’s got all the hallmarks of a great mystery thriller.  There’s plenty of action, intrigue and mystery here to grab our attention and draw us in then to keep us coming back to see what happens next.  Of course Fred’s characterization is so sharp and on point that these characters feel like they’ve stepped out of time.

I’m not a video game guy but this is the kind of historical fiction that grabs my attention and doesn’t let go.  More so when it’s done on a level such as this.

So this remains at the top of my likes list and this issue keeps delving further and further into what happened to Mikey in Terrenos through the eyes of those around him.  We open with Rya and Wendy being held by Mastema as she wishes to know why they were looking for her and about Mikey himself.  What we learn through these women is as complex and complicated as the story itself.  While Wendy knows its her son she still has a hard time accepting that this grown man is her baby.  It takes being this vulnerable to really admit that and while we’ve seen her grow this is the most i’ve felt for her yet.

Rya’s tale of Mikey arriving and growing up to become the warrior he was touted to be really opens up a new avenue for the character.  I love that his wide eyed innocence and love for his family seem to have gotten lost along the way.  Growing up that way knowing you carry such a burden on your shoulders isn’t easy and i’m beginning to see why he’d succumb to having that nevermind as a part of him.  While we’ll never know the whole truth until Mikey himself tells the truth these snippets are a great way to really flesh out so much we’ve not seen.

Joshua’s such a good writer and he’s gotten so much better over the years and the transition between the women and boys is flawlessly executed.  Seeing Mikey being attacked and Brennan unable to help is great.  The changes that boy has been through, well both but I mean Mikey, as we see him go up against Kylen’s forces.  Gosh the way that whole thing plays out is utterly amazing though I really wish Brennan would’ve been able to really give at least one of those men a what for, after all this time he’s due.

Okay so Sameal’s big reveal while not unexpected is more than a pleasant surprise and adds a whole new dimension that will shake things to their core.  I can’t wait to see how next issue goes after that!  Meanwhile poor Kylen seems to fairing on Earth just as well as he did on Terranos and well I can’t wait to see him get angrier and sloppier and come after the women in order to draw the boys out.  Okay yes that’s what i’m hoping for and it isn’t outside the realm of reason but knowing Joshua i’ll have to wait and see cause i’ve been wrong too many times when I think something is going to happen a certain, or hoped, way.

I hadn’t thought it would be possible for Andrei to get any better but as this series progresses so does his work.  I marvel at what he does on the page issue after issue and with the colouring from Adriano it just comes together perfectly.  The mix between fantasy, horror and reality become so blurred here it’s truly a treat to see.

This is one of the most imaginative and unexpected series being published today.

The Eighth Seal #4

Written by James Tynion IV
Illustrated by Jeremy Rock

STORY SO FAR First Lady Amelia Greene’s horrific hallucinations have taken control of her, leading to a violent outburst on national television. After Amelia is hospitalized, her husband promises to find the truth behind his wife’s visions... and the strange seal she carved into her desk while in a trance. Meanwhile, the Chief of Staff and his shadowy compatriots plan to use their knowledge of the occult to take over America.

I’m still thoroughly entertained, thrilled and surprised by the way James has been weaving this story.  It is so different than what we normally see in any medium and quite honestly forget Shonda Rhimes and Scandal this is the what I want to see going on in the White House.  There is so much here that seems like it’s just the tip of the iceberg for this world and these characters.  Granted the President and his wife seem to have a shelf life but Brian doesn’t and neither does this shadowy organization bent on taking over America.

I like the spotlight on Brian this issue as he and the President talk about the meaning of the design on the First Lady’s desk and his subsequent quest to find out what it means.  Though I have to admit after their meeting this issue and as Derek, the President, meets with Christian it surprises me how many people he trusts.  With what’s happening to his wife i’d think he’d be playing things a little closer to the vest at this stage not knowing whom he can truly trust.  Though with Dr. West in league with Christian they’ve really done a good job in snowballing everyone around them.

This is probably the darkest issue thus far and yet it’s still highly charged and full of that kind of fear and excitement that keeps us coming back.  Seeing Brian and his boyfriend on the phone, the dialogue is utterly charming, natural and showcases how easy it can be to write characters who may seem outside the norm behaving as normally as can be without any fanfare or fuss.  I think the interjection of some humour in this kind of serious subject matter is another reason I like James’ writing.  The right amount and moments of levity amidst the turmoil going on is just so well done.

I know next issue is supposed to be the final issue of this run but i’m seriously hoping it’s just the final issue of this arc.  I think there’s so much here that it would be a shame if it were really just ending.  The potential here is staggering and the implications just beg for more exploration.  You can’t keep a good occult cult down and with everything we’ve seen even thwarted it’s got to be only temporary.

Huge fan of what Jeremy and Michael do with the interiors.  All the imagery and the way the panels flow telling the story some with backgrounds some without really help with the impact we feel.  Plus this hideous thing that possess Amelia is fantastic and that kind of imagination boggles the mind at how good it is.

It’s series like this that show why IDW is a leader in the industry and these creators are among the best.

Lexington Comic & Toy Convention 2016

Lexington Kentucky March 11th-13th

This show has become my first show of the convention season and over the years i’ve watched this show grow and blossom.  I have to say this is the first time I have seen signs that it might be outgrowing its space.  It’s great to see though because spaced out as it is with other conventions in a 5 hour radius it really does start things off for people in the region nicely.

The staff for this show is one of the better ones i’ve seen.  They take time to answer your questions, direct you where you are looking to go and don’t have any kind of attitude with you.  So nice, smart, knowledgeable folks make a convention experience so much better, especially when you’ve got large lines, crowded areas and need to find places like the photo op lines.  Also they manage to keep the lines for autographs at their Media Guests booths running smoothly and out of the general public’s way, also extremely important in a crowded space.

Since I’ve mentioned them already let’s hit on the Media Guests.  While Power Rangers are perennial favourites it’s also great to see some of today’s current figures in attendance.  Buffy cast members always seem to delight and classic science fiction show cast members are great I loved that there were folks from SyFy’s Z Nation there.  Russell Hodgkinson who plays Doc was one of the nicest, easy going and personable people to talk to and his views on the show, cast and stories were incredible to listen to.  Though a big fail for me were the guys from Comic Book Men, i’ve seen that show it’s horrid, unrealistic to life in a shop and they don’t have real comic book knowledge and I think that space could have been better utilized.

Also all the Doctor Who being represented was Outstanding!

Picture
Comic Guests time.  I love that the amount and quality of folks is growing.  With the convention split between two floors I think it would be beneficial to put all artists upstairs together.  Kind of like having the artist alley at NYCC or C2E2.  The show does need more creators though and while it was a major bonus to see Matt Hawkins there their presence needs to be boosted.  Also some companies courted to be there would be good, Zenescope isn’t too far away and then maybe other small press like Aspen/Big Dog Ink, #Hashtag Comics, even larger ones like Aftershock Comics, Devil’s Due/First Comics would be incredible additions.  The comic side has been growing but it really needs a hard boost.
Picture
The floor layout was really well done.  The aisles and walkways were tight but not impossible to navigate, a crowded show means crowded aisles remember that folks it’s not always because of the setup!  Ah the poor food court was a disaster but that’s not the conventions fault it’s a small space and when it was lunch time on Saturday, always the busiest day, it was a wait for food so be prepared or don’t be afraid to venture out for local cuisine.

Keep the website on your radar and look for them next year it’s a great show to start the season with.  http://lexingtoncomiccon.com
