Bloody Bones and the Warlord of Oz lead a vicious onslaught on the school. Kiera Carmen and new recruit Phil are killed, leaving the surviving students doubtful of Sela’s ability to keep them safe. Meanwhile, Belinda journeys to the Realm of Myst in search of answers regarding the nature of Bloody Bones, but instead discovers that the evil Warlord of Oz is her long-lost son. As Arcane Acre attempts to recover without Kiera, Phil, and Belinda, Skye calls the students to arms against Bloody Bones.

I have to say that this issue’s spotlight on Wiglaf was absolutely fantastic.  Even better is that it gives us a chance to get to know Mary better as well.  Actually as the I finished reading this issue I realized that Pat’s been slowly but steadily writing Mary into this series in such a way that she isn’t going anywhere soon.  She sees herself as an outsider compared to the rest and is trying her best to “fit” in by doing whatever she can to help everyone.  It’s a slippery slope doing that but it’s nice to see this kind of characterization happening here all the while during a spotlight on someone else.

So Wiglaf wants to say at Arcane Acre and not go back to Oz.  Well who can blame him really Oz is kind of crazy scary place.  Though he’s enamoured with his glamour more than his actual looks which is the kind of insecurity that well we all have at some point in our lives, most noticeably in our teenage years.  I do like what we saw here it was extremely well crafted as we go through his current life, feelings and his place among his fellow students.

I also have to say that when the others are up to their own plot it seems like things get to follow through for them.  I like that they haven’t been left out or forgotten and that they are still bent on that course of action so it keeps things moving along nicely so when that story does take center stage we know it’s time.  Ah then there’s Belinda and what she’s up to in the realm of Myst.  Yeah that’s going to be a game changer well for the adults anyway I have to say I like the way the kids think instead they don’t care who Bloody Bones really is they will defeat him anway and that’s part of why I like them.

Everything about this issue was fantastic, there were some great deeper moments that were balanced by levity and one big old fashioned goof.  So yeah there’s a very good reason i’ve compared this to the teen books from Marvel because it really does rival and sometimes surpass what they’ve done.  This is a family of kids of various backgrounds and ever shifting plans, loves and ideas and it’s organic and feels like what it was like when I was that age, were I a character from Wonderland anyway.

I have to give a huge shout-out to Christopher and Erick here for their work on the interiors.  A lot went into them this issue what with so many lion faced visages going on.  The attention to detail was fabulous and very much appreciated.  They really knocked this one out of the park with what they brought us.

This is the flagship series and it’s gone through a few ups and downs but there’s a reason it’s reaching it’s highest point yet.  This is what the future looks like and to me it looks unlimited.

The Cavaliers have lost their leader, Captain Zero, and they are the only few who know the truth about his death.  After their impulsive decision to hide this truth from the local police, they move on with their own attempts to uncover what is still unknown even to them; who killed Captain Zero?

Wow okay this issue is better than the first and I have to admit folks I’m getting more and more impressed with the book and the company not to mention these creators.  The opening yeah unfortunately I can see that happening right away.  Don’t even let the body get cold before a “rival” company buys you out sure.  Though the dialogue is a complete runaround like missing the exit on the Magic Roundabout in England.  It’s superbly done by Jon.

Actually the story, dialogue and characterization throughout the entire issue is incredibly well done.  I like seeing the team coming back from the police station and each one dealing with what they’ve been through in their own way.  From quiet and pensive to acting out or in one case overreacting to what she sees.  Whether it’s through the dialogue or through the interior artwork we get to know quite a bit more about these characters than you realize.  Also the “dossier” we see on two at least explains a bit as well and Pulser well suddenly she’s not as bratty as I wanted to believe.

I do like seeing Insight stepping up into a leadership role here.  I also like the narration about her equipment.  So we really see that Zero Technologies is the company that makes the stuff to turn an ordinary person into a hero whereas Herocorp uses genetics to do so, interesting to see that so well explained throughout the issue.  Then the unexpectedness of what transpires in their meeting room with Major Impact and Rhapsody well let’s just say I’m curious than ever.  I like what the Major did however and explains what we saw last issue, though at the time I really thought it was a computer generated manipulation so it’s nice to be proven wrong.

With how this issue ends I cannot wait to see what’s going to happen next and if this Rhapsody is unstable or just grieving in her own way.

Oh and let me say in regards to the interior artwork, wow impressive.  From the opening where the art was as roundabout as the writing, through the characterization, see expressive, personalities on display to the very last page, which is a that WOW factor you need, it’s all just very smartly done.  I like the panel layouts on the pages, the use of backgrounds and shading when necessary, see after Pulser’s scan.  It’s a very complete picture presented to us here.  Nothing is overly done and it’s feels like a great super-hero book.

With the “Big Two” constantly rebooting/re-imagining it’s high time you found companies like Overground who put out books you’ll love.

Once the sun descended, insect-like hordes of moth-vampires swept over the land.  Women and Children were slaughtered in their beds.  Grown men were stolen away, never to return.  Nothing could prevent the coming of the dark.  Nothing could prevent the onslaught.  So the people built a beacon.  The beacon would become their torch in the night.  Far from the nearest settlement, someone would need to keep the great beacons alight.  The people turned to criminals to fill the ranks.  They turned to the outcasts that wandered the barren desert.  Eventually they turned to Bigfoot.

I’ve got to admit I find this all kinds of great fun.  Yeah it’s a clear take on Burroughs but this inventive, fun, interesting and quite honestly a hugely successful version for me.  Gone is the love affair aspect instead we get companionship, in the form of Bigfoot’s friend, we creatures of the night that need to be dealt with and we get a hero in an unlikely guise.  I mean c’mon what more do we need here?  Oh and that Bigfoot doesn’t utter a single word is beyond fantastic.  This is why I love comics, love small press companies and enjoy the heck of what people clearly love doing.

Oh and Andy and Tamra do a magnificent job on the interiors here.  I love the way these moth-vampires look, the various martian species are wonderful and just the commanding presence of Bigfoot through his actions/stances and facial expressions really capture everything about him you need to know.  Well that and the narration we get from the little guy who befriended Bigfoot and likes to hear himself talk.

There really is something inherently fascinating in thinking that these folks call him the Earthman.  As if he represents our planet and it’s people, or thinking we’re all like him, is one of those interesting aspects that draws you in in the first place.  That he acts without speaking and in essence is something of a hero and comes to the aid of whomever needs it gives him this whole mysterious persona that is portrayed in such a way that we’re drawn to him likes moths to a flame.

The way Josh is telling this story is pretty darn well perfect.  There’s a lot going on but it’s continual like one thing after another so there really is no rest for the wicked.  The only time you’ve got any hope is during the daylight and then fighting all night to stay alive so really things should happen at this breakneck pace.  The characterization is marvelous and the story/plot advancement is easy to see, follow and understand.  Plus his sidekick is one of those characters we love to see and his own part of this story looks just as promising as Bigfoots.

Forget John Carter because it’s really all about Bigfoot!

The Steam Man #4 (of 5)
Dark Horse Comics 2015
Story by Joe R. Lansdale

Oh my stars and garters I really hadn’t really expected things to play out like they did this issue.  Alright so when we last left these guys the Dark Rider had sent a force out to stop the boys aboard the Steam Man, which had stepped on a stick forcing it to fall down.  So the forces of these hairy things, kind of like bigfoot but more mystical in nature, attacked and well there we go and here we are.

Well I have to say that Feather is one heck of a character.  Throughout the entire issue his dialogue has been surprising and entertaining.  Also his ferocity in fighting these things really is rather impressive.  The opening fighting however is what we need to focus on right now.  So much happens here that it’s really one of those things that kind of where you get swept up in what’s presented and in a kind of whirlwind everything comes at you faster and faster.

While this isn’t the end of the story it’s very much a climactic kind of issue.  It sets up everything for next issue’s ending.  Still so much goes on in this issue that i’m terribly surprised and excited by the prospects of it.  The Dark Rider seeing what’s happening on the battlefield joins the fray in person riding astride this terribly impressive steampunk horse.  Oh yes indeed the visual of that horse is something to behold and it’s kind apocalyptic four horseman style which should give anyone nightmares.

This is where Piotr and Kelly come into play.  While Piotr might not be a household name has very quietly been amassing quite the portfolio of simply incredible, impeccable work.  The interiors here really are something to see.  From the distinctness of each of the men, the Steam Man, the Dark Rider and his forces to the backgrounds everything has it’s own unique look and feel to it.  Plus the way the pages are done with panel layouts helping the flow of the story move along as it does is nice to see.

Now the boys confront the Dark Rider up close and personal this issue and I gotta say I’m beginning to think this is one of those tales where the darkness wins.  It would indeed be a cruel twist of fate but this Dark Rider and what he’s able to go through and/or withstand is making him one hell of a threat and one i’m not sure can be stopped anymore.  I do love the grit and determination from everyone this issue and the characterization continues to shine through on every last one of them.

This is an incredible story and I love how it’s being told and it’s blending of genres.  This is one that has taken me by surprise and captured my heart and imagination and won’t let it go.

Aww I like how this issue opens as some things never change and ambition is one of them.  A reporter trying to stay on top creating lies about himself to feed the public to say in the spotlight himself.  We’ve seen that time and time again and they always get their comeuppance don’t they?  Also there’s something really in focus and inspired about the nameless cameraman’s visage that was just a standout.

We’re getting a really good look at Michael and Carson here as well.  I like the characterization going on with them.  From headlong into things, to running through the waist deep water to actually thinking it’s nice to see that these are characters who act like normal folks, such as you an me.  I do like what they add to the mix but I’m still wondering how impactful in things they are going to be.  I mean they seem to be running around lost and confused and now following the growing crowd of zombies.

Meanwhile Erika is meeting Deucalion for the first time.  I’m guessing in her reality there isn’t a man such as him so that’s interesting.  Two of Victor’s creations together for the first time who couldn’t be any more different from each other is pretty spectacular to see.  Of course aside from his lack of manners and knowing how to behave the real fun sill comes from Karloff.  He provides this whole comedic interlude into things that need moments of levity and the guys use that incredibly well here.

I really enjoyed the novels I read about Deucalion but this is different he’s faced with another of Victor’s creations that wasn’t borne of death instead is created from life.  So the whole dichotomy of how we see them is fantastic.  It’s interesting to see Victor’s evolution of how he goes about stuff though that he’s raising an army of the dead for his own purposes, of which we aren’t quite sure of right now, is something that will come to light.

I love that Dynamite takes properties such as these and brings them to life and exposes more people to them.  I may be a rarity but i’m a voracious reader and hopefully this will encourage someone to seek them out and read them as well.  Plus Chuck, Andre and Mohan make an superb team in being able to translate the material and bring it to us in this medium.

Speaking of Andre and Mohan the interiors keep getting better and better with each issue.  The unnamed Cameraman being the first thing you see in such detail.  Then there are the zombies which are pretty freaking awesome looking, to the almost romantic hero that Deucalion is and the old school movie looks Erika has it all conspires to really capture the reader’s imagination in such wonderful ways.  I love the use of pages and panels here when they are full of backgrounds when needed and blank when not it shows us this nice focus on what’s important to the story.

This is for people who love to read no matter the medium.

Oh my goodness damn I loved this whole thing!  From the beginning of the story throughout the whole thing I found the concept and execution flawless.  This is the kind of story that while seemingly science-fiction/horror/fantasy is in reality something that I could very well see actually happening.  I mean c’mon people with everything going on from cloning to gene therapy to designing your baby this kind of event well it’s not exactly out of the realm of possibility.  If anything it’s kind of scary enough to be carried out by some nutcase with a god complex.

So right off the bat we meet Raja and she’s looking for a map.  Otherwise she’ll be going around in circles and lost out in the blistering sun.  Turns out she’s in Nevada and the opening sequence well what it does is draw you in, make you wonder what the hell is going on and leave you needing to know!  It’s not just the story either because the interior artwork is pivotal in keeping you in the moment and showcasing the fact that this is something kind of extraordinary.

I mean wow this is Las Vegas and this girl, a regular human girl, is being hunted by let’s say cro-magnon's with sabretooth tigers and wooly mammoths.  Yeah the city is in ruins and there’s all kinds of overgrowth but it isn’t so far in a future where time has made the structures unrecognizable.  So there’s the question of when this takes place, well not the only one but well ya know.  With the city still looking intact and inhabitable, well certain parts anyway, but these various stages of human and animal development inside it just excite the imagination.

There’s a pretty nice recap of how the world is this way.  Rick’s commentary, see narration, will strike a chord with a lot of people in how accurate it is to today’s society.  Seriously it kind of is one of those things that in its stark honesty is something that makes the reader have a revelation of far off the rails we as mankind currently are.  Also being that far off the rails leads to some even worse, see horribly poor, decision making.

The third segment is adult oriented but if you’re going to show that and other related material be equal opportunity about it.  I mean c’mon in this day and age that you're afraid to show male nudity but not female isn’t acceptable.  This of course means the last part is where we see the other side of the coin.  It’s pretty amazingly well done in my humble opinion.  The demonstration and revelation or follow through here after learning what happened makes this even more scary believable.

From Rick’s writing the boys interiors I have to say that this is probably one of those rare first issues that you go oh okay it’s Remender i’ll give it a try and find out it’s probably one of those series that will forever change how you look at them.

This is the book you need to seek out, try and see for yourself just how damn incredible it is.

G.I. Joe foils Cobra’s plan, disabling sleeper agents all over the US! But not without a cost: two G.I. Joe agents, Chuckles and Cover Girl, are in critical condition after their missions… But is this truly the end of Cobra’s plan? Or is there more to the Cobra World Order?

Alright it’s issues like this one that I personally live for.  Sure we open with Chuckles and Cover Girl’s conditions being revealed and that’s all fine and dandy but it’s what happens after that which excites me.  This is really all about the villains, and I say that because well Cobra Commander has cut loose all those past associations and left a slew of angry folks in his wake.  Back to the opening though for a few, Lady Jaye was one of my favourites in the Cartoon so any chance I get to see her is always welcome.  Oh and the dialogue with the doctor to Duke was priceless!

Then there’s Wendy and her trusted aid Fred, yes one of those Fred’s.  I am kind of fascinated by this woman because she’s a complete tool.  She thinks that she’s making the best of being saddled with the Oversight Committee, no one else wanted, and seems to be grooming herself for bigger and better things, as is pointed out in the dialogue.  She is completely Cobra’s and she doesn’t know it, though Fred does, and i’m looking forward to seeing the complications that come with her.

What is it about Zartan that we love so much?  Over the years we’ve seen him portrayed in various ways but in the here and now as a leader of the outcast and discarded I think I like him the most.  With his espionage background and his unique abilities he’s been underused and underutilized in my humble opinion.  So what we see this issue is for me absolutely incredible characterization with him.  I like the more smart and organized man he’s shown as than the less backwater cutthroat of the past.

Duke and his wife is still something i’m trying to figure out.  It’s awfully convenient that she has suddenly been found after all this time just as Cobra is mounting a large, game changing, Earth altering event.  It all smells too coincidental and let’s face it there are no such things as coincidences.

Ah not to be left out we also see Destro and the Baroness in action as well.  With the exception of Mindbender Cobra Commander really cut all ties and that’s both genius and frightening.  I’m more than a little surprised at how Destro and Baroness are shall we say caught flat-footed.  Still what Larry is doing here with the story, characterization and plot is utterly phenomenal.  Just the way this issue ended yeah that’s what i’m talking about.

Then there’s the work of Shannon, Derek and J. are doing.  I’ve never seen these characters look as good as they do here.  The way the pages flow, panel usage and just the sheer amount of detail and backgrounds we get to see makes reading this ever the joy!  I think it’s caught somewhere between comic books and a Saturday Morning cartoon which for this series and it’s origins is exactly what it needs.

This my friends and compatriots is why I love the G.I. Joe franchise and this book and these creators.

Genkuro, a powerful shape-changer and clan leader amongst the kitsune, has called a gathering of his soldiers to Tokyo Tower to mount an offensive against their young and unpredictable foes, but they don’t know that Rori and her friends are about to drop in unanounced…

The Nurarihyon surprises me this issue.  Yes I know he’s trying to rally the clans around him but to hear his own narration made me think twice about him.  Perhaps he’s not as bad as I think he is or he’s just trying to find a way to survive the best he can?  HIs meeting with Genkuro to open this issue was kind of pointless for them, for us it served to kind of flesh a few things out for us as readers more.

I’m still fascinated to see how the old gods are reacting to the new gods.  I does remind me of what happened between Zeus and his father Chronos in the legends anyway.  We’ve seen how Rori and her friends have been resistant to the past and now we’re starting to see more and more how the old gods are just as resistant to change. Jim is an amazing writer and it’s nice to see that he’s showing us that it’s not just the younger generation that’s resistant to change here.  Also how readily going to war seems to be the answer.

Honestly when we see the kids for the first time this issue under Nurarihyon’s narration it really is pretty dead on accurate, okay at least how I also see things.  The impetuousness of youth is a common phrase for it but it really boils down to a few more base things, a feeling of entitlement, lack of understanding or caring and the best of all no respect.  How this is being presented to us here is pretty shocking as Jim manages to weave it throughout this incredible story as easily as Rori weaves the strands of reality through her fingers.

This was a pretty violent issue and while only the readers truly understand what’s happening with Rori, though really I think that Shirai should have noticed the difference in her.  So now I have to wonder if this is something that once freed of will haunt her or is this going to be the new status quo?  How long can they go without realizing she isn’t herself at times?  Though Ayane really is so bloodthirsty like a big cat that she’s more than willing to overlook Rori’s own bloodlust and violence.

O’Hara is a delight. I think she’s like the epitome of what we see a Japanese girl, her love of anime and little toys, her obedience to her parents and sweet nature then flipped on a dime as we see her fight makes the scariest of the bunch.  Though her along with their newest recruit do say a lot about this new generation of children and their place in the world.

Every month I’m constantly amazed by the quality of the interior artwork here.  Steven has emerged as one of my favourite artists with his attention to detail, imagination on display, use of backgrounds, page and panel layouts not to mention just the sheer amount of work that I see in each issue.  This is alive and vibrant and full of awe, wonder, terror and makes me the struggle going on.

There are so many reasons both bold & obvious to subtle and devious to love this series and with two trades out right now it’s a perfect time to discover why.

The Stubbs are a rowdy, trouble making bunch, but the Whatelys... folks speak of the Whatelys in hushed whispers. When the Whatleys bargain with dark forces to rid them of the Stubbs clan, four unlikely heroes are all that’s left between a ravenous legion of ghoulish, vampiric creatures and the unsuspecting world beyond the boundaries of this sleepy Ozarks community.

The progression of this story has been amazingly well done.  I’m also kind of digging the fact that whereas I thought this was going to be the climactic issue it wasn’t.  So when we last left our trio they had arrived in the center of town and now after one vampire scurries off they see if anyone is left alive.  We see the state of the stores along main street and it doesn’t look good at all.  Then R.F. notices that the church has been left unscathed.

As they head there we get some nice background on R.F. and Jack.  It’s the cute stuff that they remember from being kids that is the kind of stuff that fleshes out their characters but at that time which would seem inappropriate.  I mean the church is locked up tight but the vampires are coming now in force.  As it turns out the vampires can’t get into the church but a surprise does await them there as what remains of the townsfolk took shelter there.

Cullen really is a master wordsmith and the dialogue and story here is pretty freaking fantastic!  Gotta say this is some great unexpected stuff and that’s what keeps stories like this fresh and interesting.  When things happen you aren’t thinking will, like finding these folks and getting more characterization and characters introduced it’s fun to see how the town has shaped the boys and made them men.  I have to admit though that Jack kept everything he’d seen and learned about this Blood Feud to himself and not sharing with Annie or the others was an interesting choice.  Sure he can’t make heads or tails of what he’s seen or actually process it all that well so why not keep it all to himself?

When day breaks things change a bit.  Jack sends Annie and the rest of the survivors off to the next town while he R.F. and Sue go about something else.  I like this it’s more fun than I would’ve thought and honestly I think I gained a whole new level of respect for them.  Sure I’d like to think I too would do that but chances are unless I had no other choice well….  It just goes to show that no matter what you may think Cullen has this way of surprising you.  It really is what makes me like this more and more as it goes along.

Drew and Nick have been killing it on the interiors here.  Their take on the vampires is uniquely theirs and honestly drawing all those Tarantula’s had to be time consuming.  Plus I still think of these as the Dukes, Bo and Luke anyway, and that is something I find outrageously fun to see.  I love the use of pages and panels or just lack thereof to keep the story moving forward.

That this is a new and original take on something familiar and classic that it’s like nothing you’d have thought it could be makes this one incredibly special.

Well I have to say this issue started off a tad darker than I was expecting.  Granted it’s really powerful and fits well within this universe but still dark.  Though I have to say that I do love that we’re seeing Deputy Constable again as it keeps tying in the vignettes from other stories making them all more cohesive.  Life in New York, New York has changed yet again.

As we see the narration to Faye about the events in Vietnam and of the mysterious man known as Jungle Jim once again it seems that things keep going to a place we don’t expect.  You’d think that the group of survivors and the arrival of a Navy Chinook would be a great thing, instead Mark makes it a mixed bag for us.  Completely something different and almost giving off that feeling of helplessness at times that the zombies have already won.  It just feels like a new tone to me this time around, maybe i’m crazy who knows but i’m digging it!

This issue is so rife with incredible characterization that it gets to you.  I mean heck even with the third segment when we get back to that whole crazy mess with Nixon.  I have no idea where this one is going but hopefully it’ll lead to the next mini-series where this can be taken to a whole new level.  Yes it all ties into that story we saw in Vegas and yet again the different stories are tying into one another in ways that i’ve been wanting to see.

So when this issue heads back to Vietnam, same time frame as current New York, New York just for clarification things get even more revealing.  We’ve seen that Jungle Jim is more an idea taken up by different people at different times so that someone may just have taken up the mantle and a new mission is nice to see.  Keeps the legend alive and well in a way still puts fear into the hearts of men who do evil right?  Or take advantage of this situation for their own nefarious deeds.  I like the idea they’ve got going here and it’s a great way to keep future mini’s on the hook.  Oh and the one surprise, how have I missed knowing or realizing that one?, we get here is better than I could have hoped for.

I like Jeff’s work here and the way it all has that very comic book feel to it.  He has a great eye or page and panel layouts to keep the story flowing.  He doesn’t shy away from backgrounds at all, which thrills me to no end.  His pin-up pages are spectacular to say the least.  I just wish the zombies were scarier, see less comic bookish, and the war scenes were darker, less bright.  This would add a different kind of depth to his work that would really make things stand out more for me.  Perhaps he and Jay can work on a few things where we see a different approach to a few different scenarios so that they don’t come across as all being the “same” in appearance.

Seriously though this has been one of if not THE favourite longest running set of mini-series of mine.  Sure i’m a horror fan and a zombie fan but it’s the continual evolution of the stories and the characters and the way Mark manages to weave different ones together that really keep me coming back.
