This is a prime example of why we love Dynamite! Since they currently have both the Alice Cooper and much of the Chaos Universe in their repertoire right now it’s only natural that they have a team-up right? Well not necessarily a team-up per se but who knows it may just come down to that and after reading this issue it seems that there’s an outside force pushing all these characters into a confrontation. Who that is remains unknown and i’m fine with that but in my humble opinion it seems it’s someone who wishes to take Alice’s place as Lord of Nightmares.
We open with a look at Alice and what’s happening with him. His realm seems to be less under his control these days than he likes as the denizens seem to be growing bolder and less afraid of him. Okay just from the opening I was in and Tim and Jim have created a nice premise to start things off and seeing Alice Cooper make another comeback into mainstream prominence is never a bad thing.
What I found also extremely interesting was how each of the Chaos Universe cast was being assembled as well. Each gets their own introduction to the story though Purgatori does steal the spotlight in Chastity’s. Along with a rather interesting development in Chastity herself that if left alone could jeopardize everything Purgatori is striving for. That nothing is as it seems and that there are side events happening with the characters make the story that much more complex and interesting but again it raises the question who else is in play helping these things along?
The Chosen are probably the least well known of the Chaos gang and here’s hoping that the boys are able to really flesh them and their place out more. Yeah they are teenage monsters brought together to fight the bigger bad out there but that alone isn’t enough. As a reader we want to know more about them and why they are important. Though Vex and what she does is demonstrated nicely it does leave me wanting more since I know so little about them.
It’s always fun when we see Evil Ernie and this appearance is no different. Still with Smiley and Mary is a delight to see though what he personally goes through here could distract him from what they need to do. Even if they have no idea what that is.
Alright folks so what kind of event can make Purgatori use Chastity to work with the Chosen to take out Alice Cooper? Well we don’t know but we’ve got five more issues to find out. Suffice it to say though that the boys have assembled on heck of a cast, brought us just the right amount of intrigue to get us hooked on the story and left us thinking what the heck! Now all that’s left is to wait a month for the next chapter, alas.
Jim and Aiaku do some extremely nice work on the interiors. I love how Alice looks and they make the Chaos characters look incredible without being slutty or overdone. With Chastity and Purgatori yeah that’s an accomplishment in itself. Lots of emotion and intrigue in the artwork that helps keep the reader’s attention.
What this does is make me want to see more Chaos being published by Dynamite. They’ve got these dynamite characters and some of the industries top talent at their disposal so why not use em!
