New York, New York, Oct. 5, 2018 — Oni Press is proud to announce that celebrated children’s graphic novelist, Katie O’Neill, has won the Harvey award for the Best Children or Young Adult Book for The Tea Dragon Society!

"It is a huge honour to receive the Harvey Award! The Tea Dragon Society is one of many works of children’s media this year that are pushing for LGBT-spectrum characters to be seen just as characters, as people who are a natural, visible part of this world,” said Katie O’Neill. “It makes me excited for the future, and for a generation of kids to grow up with a crucial and often vulnerable aspect of their identity accepted and reflected in the media they see. I’m proud to be a part of this, and I’m extremely thankful for all the support and kindness that has been shown towards my book.”

Prior to the Harvey win, this year alone, The Tea Dragon Society acquired two Eisner Awards for Best Publication for Kids (ages 9-12) and Best Webcomic, won the Dwayne McDuffie Kids Comics award, and made the ALA Rainbow List. In 2017, the title also made the list for Amazon.com’s Best Comics & Graphic Novels as well as School Library Journal's Top 10 Graphic Novels.

The Tea Dragon Society is the follow-up to Katie O’Neill’s first book with Oni Press, Princess Princess Ever After (September 2016), is a gentle fantasy that follows the story of a young blacksmith apprentice, and the people she meets as she becomes entwined in the enchanting world of Tea Dragons. The Tea Dragon Society has also taken on its own franchise with the creation of the much-loved Chamomile Tea Dragon plushie that debuted at NYCC in 2017,The Tea Dragon Society Card Game (Oni Games in conjunction Renegade Studios) in June 2018, and the Chamomile Dragon enamel pin at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

The Harvey Awards are one of the comic industry’s oldest and most prestigious awards. Recognizing outstanding achievement in multiple categories, the Harvey’s have been a fixture of the comic industry since 1988. The awards ceremony made its debut at New York Comic Con this year in celebration of the Harvey’s 30th anniversary.
