Family Magic and Cultural Lore Take Center Stage in this Action-packed Creator-owned Series from Oni Press
PORTLAND, OR: Oni Press is pleased to announce the forthcoming Latinx single-issue series, Season of the Bruja, written by Aaron Durán, illustrated and colored by up-and-coming artist Sara Soler (Us), and with lettering by AndWorld Design’s Jaime Martinez, coming Spring 2022.

"Season of the Bruja is an exploration of forgotten culture and heritage I’ve been trying to tell for years,” said Aaron Durán. “Working with Sara has been a dream; her art and energy elevated our comic to levels I would never have imagined, and Shawna [Gore, Oni Press senior editor] does what all great editors do: she found the strongest story within the pages and helped Sara and I bring it to life.” Season of the Bruja is Durán’s debut project in which he adapted much of the lore for the series from his own family’s traditions.

Althalia Cabrera might seem like any other witchy Portland hipster whiling away her days behind the counter of a freaky occult museum, but there's more to her whole deal than a trendy pursuit of the craft. Althalia is a bruja by blood—the youngest in a long line of powerful magic users from a long-ago culture indigenous to Mexico. In her twenty years, Althalia has studied with her loving abuela by her side, supporting and mentoring her use of the family magic, and protecting her from the darkest parts of their practice's history. But just as Althalia's inner light and power begin to shine, the darkness of the past finds its way into her world and strikes a tragic blow, testing Althalia in ways she might not be prepared to survive.

Sara Soler said, “Season of the Bruja is a story that vindicates culture and diversity, the fighting for one's own rights and also of learning, forgiveness, and the love that you can find in the family, whether of blood or not. Aaron is an exceptional storyteller, not only because of how he tells the story, but because of the values with which the script has been infused. And [...] I couldn't have asked for a better editor! [Shawna] has fought tooth and nail to carry out this project throughout some of the most difficult years I can remember (Hi there, 2020!) [...]. Aaron and Shawna have made Season of the Bruja the kind of project I've always wanted to be involved in!"

According to Durán, “Season of the Bruja is an ongoing journey of discovering our roots, and I think everyone will see a bit of themselves in the series."

Inspired by Aaron Durán’s lifelong love for his Mexican family’s cultural traditions and his devoted fandom of horror stories, comics, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season of the Bruja is a five-part series and will be available where comics are sold March 16, 2022.

About the Creators

Aaron Durán has lived in Portland, Oregon, for over twenty years, but spent his childhood in the desolate high desert of Northern California. He’s worn many hats over the years, going from film production to radio host, and writing has always been his love. In addition to his young adult novels, Aaron has written stories for Dark Horse Comics, Image Comics, and Activision. When he’s not at his keyboard, he’s in the kitchen experimenting with traditional Mexican ingredients to rediscover lost dishes.

Sara Soler is a comic book artist and illustrator born in Spain currently living in Barcelona, where she moved to study at Escola Joso. There, she started working in comic books and the publishing world with short stories for several fanzines, but also as a costume and stage designer, and for animation studios as a storyboard and background artist for the Memories of a Man in Pajamas adaptation of Paco Roca's graphic novel. Her professional career began in 2017 with Red & Blue (Panini comics), and since then, with publishers such as Dark Horse Comics, Planeta Comics or RBA, on titles such as Dr. Horrible: Friends Forever, Plants vs. Zombies, Primavera Graphic Sound, and Planeta Manga Vol. 2. She keeps the hard work fueled by dark coffee and with the help of her assistant, Cimmeria the cat.

Jaime Martinez is a letterer for AndWorld Design—the design and production studio founded by veteran letterer Deron Bennett. The comic-based company’s extensive list of clients includes BOOM!, Z2, Image, Dark Horse, Vault, IDW, Oni Press, AHOY, and DC Comics. They also produce typesetting, cover design, and illustration for Amazon Publishing as well. You can see their work on such acclaimed titles as Something is Killing the Children, Canto, and Quincredible. AndWorld’s team of artists have garnered three Harvey nominations, three Eisner nods, and multiple Ringo nominations.

G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero --
Saturday Morning Adventures
Comic Book Recaptures the Frolicking Fun of ’80s Cartoons

Revisit the Beloved G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero Animated Series
with Four-Issue Miniseries from IDW Publishing, Beginning February

SAN DIEGO, CA (November 18, 2021) – With the nostalgic appetite for ’80s pop culture as powerful as ever, IDW is giving fans what they want with the February debut of G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero—Saturday Morning Adventures, a special send-up of the classic cartoon, shipping monthly and featuring the fan-favorite creative team of writer Erik Burnham, artist Dan Schoening, and colorist Luis Antonio Delgado.

Everyone knows that G.I. JOE is the code name for America's daring, highly trained special mission force, and that their purpose is to defend human freedom against Cobra, a ruthless criminal organization determined to rule the world. But now, Cobra has launched the Aladdin Initiative, their most versatile weapon yet... challenging Duke, Scarlett, Snake Eyes, and the G.I. JOE team like never before!

“I loved how straight-up weird cartoons can be,” says Burnham. “The G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero cartoon allowed for gremlins, Egyptian gods, and of course, a ninja dressed in an 80’s New Wave outfit, wig and all. You never knew where the show might take you. Writing a story set in that universe, you can do anything… and I’m partnered with artists like Dan Schoening and Luis Antonio Delgado, who can draw anything. The idea we came to felt right at home within the world of the cartoon, and I can't wait to share it with everyone.”

“As a child of the ’80s, I always had a healthy dose of the G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero animated show, not to mention the vast line-up of action figures. It's an honor to take the cartoon that I enjoyed (and still do) so much and visually translate it into the comic book medium,” says Schoening.

“So many times, we fondly remember our past favorites from the world of pop culture through a skewed nostalgic lens, only to find disappointment when we revisit them… but in the case of G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero, the loyal fandom is still very active, the classic comics and cartoons still hold up, and the only skewed lens is Dr. Mindbender’s patented monocle,” says editor Tom Waltz. “The superstar creative team of Erik, Dan, and Luis are here to bring us a brand-new adventure that reminds us of why G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero is the exception to the nostalgia rule!”

G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero — Saturday Morning Adventures #1 will be available with multiple cover variants for retailers and fans to enjoy, each illustrated by fan-favorite artists long associated with IDW Transformers comics: Cover A by series artist Dan Schoening, Cover B by Megan Huang (Tartarus, Rangers of the Divide), and a Retailer Incentive edition by Billy Penn.

Additionally, fans can check out full episodes of the G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero animated series on the official Hasbro YouTube channel.

Iconic Scream Queens Together Again In New Sonya Devereaux Comic Book!

Iconic horror movie actresses Brinke Stevens, Linnea Quigley, and Michelle Bauer reunite again!

“Starring Sonya Devereaux: Scream Queen Summer Camp Massacre #1” is the new 48-page one-shot issue of the unique series in which real-life actors lend their likenesses to co-star with fictional B-movie actress Sonya Devereaux in outrageous, ultra low-budget, so-bad-they’re-good movies. The legendary trio, along with popular genre actress Tiffany Shepis, find themselves in familiar territory with Sonya playing Scream Queens attending a horror convention held at the notorious summer camp that inspired the slasher genre. What could possibly go wrong, right? Glad you asked. Their camp uniforms are too small, there’s only one stall so showering becomes a group activity, and the original serial killer, Rag Face, is back to continue his streak of creative, gory murders — and to stalk the sexy starlets.

“Starring Sonya Devereaux,” an independent comic book published by American Mythology Productions, and its creative team were voted “Best Comic,” “Best Artists”and “Best Writers” in Critical Blast’s Best of 2020 Awards that included titles from major publishers like DC Comics. This is only the second time readers have voted for the creative team of one book to win all the top prizes in the annual awards held by the news and review site for entertainment and pop culture and they hope to take advantage of their new status during their new crowdfunding campaign.

Picture
American Mythology had remarkable success in their prior crowdfunding effort for the trade paperback collection of “Starring Sonya Devereaux.” The Indiegogo campaign reached its funding goal in 24 hours and AMP extended the effort to reach its stretch goal, resulting in additional exclusive rewards for backers. Now the publisher hopes to have a similar experience for the title’s new issue.

The Indiegogo campaign can be found at: https://igg/me/at/SonyaSQSCM

Starring Sonya Devereaux: Scream Queen Summer Camp Massacre #1 is written by Emmy Award and Rondo Award winning writer Todd Livingston (The Black Forest, Rocky & Bullwinkle Show, Sheena – Queen of the Jungle) & Nick Capetanakis (Pink Panther, So, You’ve Downloaded A Demon, Hobbes & Phil vs Zombies) and illustrators Brendon & Brian Fraim (The Three Stooges, Overstreet FCBD, Knights of the Dinner Table). They are also the team responsible for The ODD Squad and the critically-acclaimed America JR (where Sonya first appeared). Colors are by industry veteran Matt Webb.

“It’s so intelligently done on so many levels that it’s entertaining, engaging and just a pleasure and a half to read…this is just genuine fun in the most absurd way possible and it needs to find its way into your world.” — READING WITH A FLIGHT RING

Star Trek: Klingons Comic Book Chronicles the Unforgettable Legend of a Warrior King
IDW’s February Star Trek Special Ushers in a New Line of Oversized Comics Expanding the Lore of Alien Species
SAN DIEGO, CA (November 17, 2021) – IDW, the proud home to Star Trek comic books and graphic novels since 2007, will explore strange new worlds beginning in February with Star Trek: Klingons, the first thrilling installment in a series of extra-long one-shots spotlighting the franchise’s many memorable alien species.

Writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, two of the lead story architects on the critically acclaimed Star Trek: Year Five series, join the fan-favorite Timothy Green II (the artist of such sci-fi hits as Starlord, Annihilators, and Animal Man) to relate the legend of Kahless the Unforgettable, the greatest warrior of the Klingon Empire, from the death of his coward brother Morath to his victory at Three Turn Bridge.

“I was, in large part, raised by Star Trek… and no culture helped me come to terms with my masculinity, my anger, and my personal code of honor more than the Klingons,” says Lanzing. “So when I tell you the only thing more exciting to me than taking the Enterprise crew on their final journey in Star Trek: Year Five is getting to show the man behind the myth of Kahless The Unforgettable, you can believe it."

"The Klingon people provide a rich counterpoint to the Federation. They present a lifestyle that is loud and fearless, but also incredibly egalitarian and fair; no matter who you are, respect is earned, not given,” says Kelly. “We've been pitching this story since before we'd ever been hired to write Star Trek. We never in a million years thought it would be a story we actually got to bring to life. And with an artist of the caliber of Timothy Green II -- whose detailed, beautiful work owes so much to the greats of Japanese tradition -- this will be a saga worthy of Kahless."

Following February’s tale of the legendary Klingon warrior Kahless, IDW will continue its tour of prominent species with Star Trek: Ferengi in April, featuring the Milky Way’s most cunning and avaricious aliens. These special one-shots will provide fans with new stories set within the “prime reality,” while IDW’s massive Star Trek: Mirror War event (comprising a miniseries of nine issues and several spin-off one-shots) delves into the lore of the Mirror Universe and its evil Enterprise crew.

“There is no Star Trek without the vast population of alien species calling the universe home,” says editor Heather Antos. “From Klingons to Ferengi, Vulcans to Trill and beyond, it’s so exciting to delve deep into what makes each of the species a unique addition to the world of Trek, Mirrorverse, or otherwise!”

Star Trek: Klingons will be available with two cover variants for retailers and fans to enjoy, including Cover A by interior artist Timothy Green II and a Retailer Incentive edition by Alexandra Beguez.

For information on how to acquire Star Trek comics and graphic novels from IDW, please contact your local comic shop or visit www.comicshoplocator.com to find a store near you.

Aquamen, a new ongoing comic book series by the creative team of Chuck Brown, Brandon Thomas, Sami Basri and Adriano Lucas, will launch out of the conclusions of Aquaman: The Becoming and Black Manta in February 2022!
When a suicide bomber in Middle America is revealed as an Atlantean sleeper agent seemingly gone rogue, the Aquamen—Arthur Curry and Jackson Hyde—are on the case. But it soon becomes clear that the tragedy was not just a single bad actor, but the beginnings of a much larger and more dangerous chain reaction…and the heart of an explosive Atlantean conspiracy! If Arthur’s not careful, the secrets he’s keeping—from Mera, Tula, Tempest, Atlantis, the surface, and even Jackson—could cause a rift from which the Aquamen might never recover!

Also in February 2022, the final issue of Black Manta will be a can’t-miss issue leading directly into the Aquamen launch! It’s villain versus villain as Black Manta fights to stop Devil Ray, whose eyes are set on Atlantis but whose ambitions might very well bring about the end of the world. Will Manta finally be able to own his roots, his power, and his flaws to save Atlantis…and himself?

Black Manta #6, written by Chuck Brown with art by Valentine de Landro, a cover by David Talaski and a card stock variant cover by Sanford Greene, arrives in comic shops on February 8—two weeks before Aquamen #1 arrives!
And the final issue of Aquaman: The Becoming leads directly into the Aquamen launch as well! Alongside family old and new, Jackson Hyde races to stop the next big undersea terrorist attack—and this time, Mera’s the target! But if he hopes to overcome his greatest enemy yet and protect the people he loves most, he’ll have to stop waiting for someone to give him permission to lead. It’s time for Jackson to reach out and take the mantle of Aquaman!

Aquaman: The Becoming #6, written by Brandon Thomas with pencils by Diego Olortegui, inks by Wade von Grawbadger, color by Adriano Lucas, a cover by David Talaski and a card stock variant cover by Khary Randolph, arrives in comic shops on February 15—one week before Aquamen #1!

Now Live on Kickstarter!
Kickstart an all-new Cyberpunk Sci-fi series that is utterly unforgettable!

NOV. 15, 2021, (SEATTLE, WA) — There’s a car going around taking brains. And where one crazy concept stemmed from a single joke, you’ll find curator of Studio Cinco and ultra-modern comics writer and artist, Ian Cinco. Now live on Kickstarter, Neon Spring, Issue #0: This Car Neutralizes Douchebags, on the surface is a mind-bending, science fiction, cyberpunk series about humans, cyborgs, A.I. and all manner of machines battling for dominance—dive a bit deeper, and explore shifting identities and consciousness nature and machines merging and evolving as one.
Neon Spring, Issue #0: This Car Neutralizes Douchebags introduces the Skull Squad and Mother, a car fitted with a superintelligent A.I., lobotomizing and extracting brains, only to refit them with a device to control the entire body.

After a brain-picking mission goes astray, Skull Squad finds Zuzu, an apparent sexbot, to help lure their target into the car. Their attempt to salvage the mission is a success, but Zuzu is not what she seems and with her comes the specter of the Neon Giant.

It’s a twisted and epic journey of Master Skull, his daughter Araina, Baby Skull, her infatuation with the mighty robot Zuzu, and  Mother’s rise to omnipotence of superintelligence.
“Neon Spring began as a joke—two of my friends and I were laughing about L.A. traffic, and somehow I ended up on a rant about a driverless car that lobotomizes people,” said writer and artist Ian Cinco. “As we laughed hysterically at the idea, the time I spent absorbing and fantasizing about creating comics came to mind and this single joke coalesced into one of the most complete visions that’s ever come to me. It took five years and a pandemic to finally clear the runway for this project. Issue #0 is a brief glimpse into a future world where I intend to push science fiction and cyberpunk conventions as well as my own ability to generate mind melting ideas. You can expect pulp violence, thought provoking concepts and deep emotional character arcs. I couldn’t be more excited to share this wild ride with the world.

Devil's Due Talent Search For Artists & Colourists!

11/10/2021

Picture
Devil’s Due is holding a worldwide talent search for new artists & colourists for a number of upcoming projects, and the talent we’re looking for could be you! So, if you’ve ever wanted to work on a major comic book series from one of the world’s best indie publishers, now is your chance. Shoot your shot and send us a Dropbox or Google Drive link to your absolute best work. We’re looking for sequential artists who can tell a story, convey emotion and draw some kick-ass action scenes. Specifically, we’re hoping to find artists for The Encoded & Mercy Sparx, and both titles have some particular skills you’ll need to pull these books off.

For Mercy Sparx, we’re looking for someone with the ability to draw action and supernatural creatures. That’s a must, but equally important is attention to detail and slice of life charm. Plus, you’ll need an eye for current fashions amongst different subcultures, and grimey-ass dive bars.

For The Encoded, we’re looking for someone who can draw humans and robots with equal panache, in a series that aims for a grounded sci-fi feel set in the year 2055.
But wait, there’s more!

We’re also looking for colorists! This means all you coloring professionals should link us to samples of your best and favorite work too, so we can pair you up with the appropriate artist and start making some dang comic books!
Send links (only links, please do not send files) to [email protected] with the title: TALENT SEARCH
