Discover the Monsters within the Shadows in a Groundbreaking New Series in September 2021

LOS ANGELES, CA (June 18, 2021) – BOOM! Studios today announced MAW, a provocative five-issue horror series by award-winning journalist and opinion writer Jude Ellison S. Doyle (Dead Blondes and Bad Mothers: Monstrosity, Patriarchy, and the Fear of Female Power) and artist A.L. Kaplan (Jim Henson’s The Storyteller: Tricksters), that explores the anger of those trapped by society’s expectations and the monsters born from that collective rage, available in September 2021.

Dragged by her sister Wendy to a feminist retreat on the remote island of Angitia, Marion Angela Weber hopes to gain some perspective and empowerment… that isn’t at the bottom of a bottle. But everything is horribly derailed after an assault on their first night there.

The violent encounter awakens something in Marion she never imagined, triggering warped mutations in her body, and bringing forth a hunger she can’t bring herself to name. When the townsfolk react with suspicion and violence, what unforgivable act will transform Marion into the very monster they’ve made her out to be?

Jude Ellison S. Doyle (they/he) is the author of Trainwreck: The Women We Love to Hate, Mock and Fear... and Why (Melville House, 2016) and Dead Blondes and Bad Powers: Monstrosity, Patriarchy and the Fear of Female Power (Melville House, 2019). Their columns on gender, power, and pop culture have appeared at GEN, Elle, the Guardian, the Atlantic, and all over the Internet. This is their first comic book.

“MAW might be the most fun I've ever had as a writer. It's a love letter to all the ways horror can tell powerful, subversive and transformative stories about gender, and it's a big, messy chunk of my heart that I somehow got paid to throw on a page. It's been an honor to work with BOOM! and A.L. Kaplan on this, and I can't wait to share it with you. MAW transformed me,” said Doyle.

A.L. Kaplan is an American cartoonist and horror aficionado currently living, drawing, and blasting doom metal to his cats in the Wild West. He illustrated an issue of Jim Henson's The Storyteller published by BOOM! Studios and self-published the comic Full-Spectrum Therapy. You can find him on Twitter and Instagram @alkcomics

“MAW is a fun, dark dive into how monsters—both fantastic and real—are made,” said Kaplan.

MAW #1 features main cover art by artist Ariela Kristantina (The Many Deaths of Laila Starr), and variant cover art by acclaimed illustrators Megan Hutchison-Cates (The Nice House on the Lake), Abigail Jill Harding (Ask for Mercy), and more.

“It’s been a true joy working with Jude and A.L. MAW expertly uses the horror genre to explore gender, identity, hidden trauma, and the potent emotions resulting from society’s shifting expectations around all three,” said Sierra Hahn, Executive Editor, BOOM! Studios. “MAW is full of gruesome horrors, twists and turns that asks the reader ‘What’s scarier? The dormant monster within ourselves or the unknown ones lurking in the shadows?’”

MAW is the newest release from BOOM! Studios’ eponymous imprint, home to critically acclaimed original series, including BRZRKR by Keanu Reeves, Matt Kindt, and Ron Garney; Proctor Valley Road by Grant Morrison, Alex Child, and Naomi Franquiz; We Only Find Them When They’re Dead by Al Ewing and Simone Di Meo; Seven Secrets by Tom Taylor and Daniele Di Nicuolo; Something is Killing the Children by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera; Once & Future by Kieron Gillen and Dan Mora; The Many Deaths of Laila Starr by Ram V and Filipe Andrade; and Eve by Victor LaValle and Jo Mi-Gyeong. The imprint also publishes popular licensed properties, including Dune: House Atreides from Brian Herbert, Kevin J. Anderson, and Dev Pramanik; Mighty Morphin and Power Rangers from Ryan Parrott, Marco Renna, and Francesco Mortarino; and Magic from Jed McKay and Ig Guara.

Print copies of MAW #1 will be available for sale in September 2021 exclusively at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the one nearest you) or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and Kindle.

Hip Hop Icon, Visual Artist and Founder of Public Enemy Chuck D Collaborates on Original Graphic Novel With Z2 Comics and Creators Troy Jeffrey Allen, Che Grayson, Evan Narcisse and Regine Sawyer

LOS ANGELES, CA (June 18, 2021) – Z2, along with UMe/Def Jam, announces the first-ever graphic novel from hip hop icon Chuck D, Apocalypse 91: The Revolution Never Sleeps, the latest in the publisher’s series of graphic celebrations of music icons which pair some of most notable names in comics with music luminaries from all genres. The book will be available in November, marking the 30th anniversary of the album that inspired it, Apocalypse 91: The Enemy Strikes Black. Nominated for a GRAMMY Award, the album hit #4 on the Billboard 200 chart and featured powerful anthems “Shut ‘Em Down,” “Can’t Truss It” and “By the Time I Get To Arizona,” a fiery retort to the state governor’s refusal to recognize the new Martin Luther King, Jr national holiday.

“For the past few years, and especially during lockdown, I’ve been drawn back to my roots in visual arts,” says Chuck D. “This graphic novel is a new take on the artwork I’ve been making, growing naturally from the paint and pens that express what’s on my mind and reflect what’s happening around us. It was a real honor to have my illustrations alongside the who’s who of comic book artists.” In recent years, Chuck’s visual artwork has appeared in solo and group shows in galleries throughout the world and is part of the permanent collection at The Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum Of African American History And Culture, including his design of the renowned Public Enemy logo. On Friday, he offers his new NFT collection on Foundation, declaring NFTs as “the new canvas” for visual artists. Chuck is a graduate of New York’s Adelphi University with a B.F.A. in Graphic Design.

Apocalypse 91: Revolution Never Sleeps begins in 1991 and explodes into far-flung futures with a series of speculative fiction stories by the industry's leading creators, including Evan Narcisse (Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Black Panther), Regine Sawyer (Dark Nights: Death Metal), Che Grayson (Batman: Urban Legends), Troy-Jeffrey Allen (Villain: All Caps), and many more. Revolutionaries in every millennium stand up and fight the power.

The poignant and inspired graphic novel inspired by PE’s 1991 album, will be released in the fall of its thirtieth anniversary with multiple editions available to order now direct from Z2 Comics, including limited edition vinyl and prints exclusively available to the deluxe and super deluxe editions. In conjunction, UMe will release a special limited-edition version of this icon LP, originally released in 1991 by Def Jam Recordings.  Standard softcover and hardcover versions available in finer comic, book, and record stores everywhere in November. Preorder your copy today.

June 17, 2021, (TAOS, NM) — Avast ye matey! Metalshark Bro co-writers Kevin Cuffe and Bob Frantz (Ninja Nuns, Spirit of 666) invite pulp lovers to Kickstart an all-new swashbuckling adventure, The Dust Pirates! With exciting action sequences illustrated by renowned artist Tony Gregori (The Worst Dudes, Deuce of Hearts, Ancient Noise) and colors by Josh Jensen (Ninja Nuns), this clever and canny 80-page OGN is a reflection of modern society, tackling themes of the current social and political climate: the battle between proletariat and bourgeoisie.

Ysennia, a revolutionary water mage transports two dashing pirates, the rouglishy-charming Blackheart Sam Bellamy and the tough and thoughtful Quinitor from 1790’s Earth to a desert world known as Atlantis in a desperate attempt to save its people from Xsicor, the tyrannical emperor of Atlantis. The powerful, ruling class of Atlantis dominates the population through control of water—the world’s most important natural resource.

“Bob and I worked as co-writers again because we enjoy telling stories together, it seems to be the natural way at this point for us to tell stories,” said writer Kevin Cuffe. “The project was inspired by our love of other pulp stories, but we wanted to make pulp stories where everyone felt welcome.”

“Kevin and I wanted to show we could do more than absurdist comedy,” said writer
Bob Frantz. “Not that there's anything wrong with a sharkman fighting possessed pastries, but we wanted to tell a more classic action-adventure story. We begged Tony to draw this book because we knew that he possessed the imagination needed to create this “Desert Atlantis” visually. Tony has such great energy, his excitement for the world we were crafting was contagious. He would send over these amazing designs and Kevin and I felt like we had to tell a story worthy of Tony’s bold work.”

“I always enjoy working with Bob and Kevin,” said artist
Tony Gregori. “They're creative guys with amazing personalities and charming dispositions. The perfect writers to bring a swashbuckling bromance comic to life with! I hope folks reclaim the sense of adventure they got from watching films like The Goonies and Indiana Jones, or from reading comics like Flash Gordon and Starlight.

Variant cover by Mack ChaterThe campaign pledge tiers will feature limited edition Kickstarter exclusive covers from some of the hottest artists working in comics including the Eisner-nominated Mack Chater (Sword Daughter, Briggs Land), Ringo-nominated Liana Kangas (Trve Kult, She Said Destroy), Jason Copland and Josh Jensen (Full Tilt, Kill All Monsters). K. Lynn Smith (For Goodness Sake, Plume), and Joe Mulvey and Josh Jensen (Wailing Blade, Scam).

Kickstart THE DUST PIRATES

Full of heart and revolutionary action, The Dust Pirates will surely feed fans of Conan, Flash Gordon, and Indiana Jones to the gills! Lettered and edited by Chas! BELLE COMPACT ON SALE JUNE 29TH
Bésame Cosmetics Announces Launch of Disney Princess
Signature Compact Collection

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 15, 2021

To celebrate Disney's Ultimate Princesses Celebration, Gabriela Hernandez, the creative historian and founder of Bésame Cosmetics, has created a stunning collection of keepsake refillable compacts for all your favorite heroines. Individually molded and hand finished (see video of process here), these metal compacts will be treasured for ages — just like the princesses they represent.

These refillable compacts are made with a cast metal base and finished with gold, rose gold, or silver plating. Every compact uses unique techniques to honor the stunning artwork featured in each Princess’s story. From bold enamels to Swarovski crystals, every compact is embellished beautifully, creating a collectible piece of Disney magic.

"I wanted to highlight iconic moments from each film," says Gabriela Hernandez, founder of Bésame Cosmetics. "We intentionally chose an eclectic array of design styles”. Each compact features its own inspiration, from Art Deco to Victorian - all based on the styles of the individual princesses. Additionally, every princess has their own name in the compact, making each compact unique and precious, true to the corresponding princess."

Inside the compact is a finely-milled highlighter and applicator puff. Natural hued, with a hint of gold, the powder highlight adds a warm radiance to any skin tone. In addition to the highlighter, this compact fits the full range of Bésame refills.

Each compact comes in its own collectible box and paired with a unique Princess Lipstick. Lipstick colors are an exact match to the inks used on the character’s lips in the animation art, truly bringing the Disney magic to life.

As our special contribution to the Ultimate Princess Celebration, these units will be extremely limited. Only 500 of each Princess Compact have been made, and these designs will not be available again.

Each of the compact and lipstick sets will retail for $125. The collection will not be restocked. Compacts/lipsticks for each princess will be released on the following dates:
  • Belle, June 29
  • Mulan, July 13
  • Ariel, July 27
  • Aurora, August 10
  • Jasmine, August 24
  • Cinderella, September 7
  • Pocahontas, September 21
  • Rapunzel, October 5
  • Merida, October 19
  • Tiana, November 2
  • Moana, November 9
  • Snow White, November 16

The collection will debut June 29th with book-loving heroine Belle. Belle’s compact features the enchanted rose from the opening moments of Disney Beauty and The Beast. The multiple colors of hand poured enamel mimic stained glass and create a truly striking design. More than a simple portrait, the artwork encompasses the story behind Belle’s romantic adventure.

Open the compact to find “Belle” engraved beside the mirror and a natural gold highlight powder to enjoy. The matching soft rose lipstick is based on the inks used for the character in the 1991 film.

All makeup from Bésame is cruelty-free, paraben-free, gluten-free, mineral-oil free and sustainably made in California.
"After spending a full year developing this collection, we're very proud of each compact," stated Hernandez. "The quality of the makeup is lovely, and each compact has its own unique style. This collection fuses makeup with a form of personal expression and art."

On Sale from Fantagraphics This June

(June 15) Have you ever imagined that you lived in a different and glorious world where all the recognized masterpieces in the Western pantheon of art history were painted by women? If not, no problem: The renowned and award-winning painter and illustrator Anita Kunz has imagined it for you in her hilariously inventive and masterfully executed ANOTHER HISTORY OF ART, which Fantagraphics will publish this June.

From the Renaissance to the pop art movement, the most lauded paintings in the history of Western art have been almost entirely manmade. But in ANOTHER HISTORY OF ART, award-winning painter and illustrator Anita Kuntz filters these iconic works through the female gaze. Her alternative history celebrates an august pantheon of Old Mistresses and mothers of Modern art composed of such familiar figures as Leona da Vinci, Diega Velásquez, Paola Picasso, Henrietta Matisse, and Vincenza Van Gogh, the talented yet troubled young woman whose true genius was not recognized until long after her untimely death.

ANOTHER HISTORY OF ART is a brilliantly satirical and feminist counterfactual history of art conceived, written, and painted by one of our most accomplished contemporary artists. Conceived with delicious wit, boundless humor, and an eye for the telling aesthetic detail, Kunz's recreations are not only stunning paintings in their own right but a sly, revisionist social commentary on the male-dominated history of Western civilization. Included on each page opposite the painting is a brief biography of each woman artist.

Fantagraphics will publish the surreal and hilarious parody ANOTHER HISTORY OF ART on June 22, 2021.

Missoula MT (6/15/2021): After the biggest influx of post-Final Order Cutoff reorders in Vault Comics' history, the first issue of BARBARIC has sold out of a generous overprint at the distributor two weeks ahead of release. The debut issue of Vault's record-breaking series is being rushed back to print with a new cover by Nathan Gooden and Tim Daniel.

The second printing of Barbaric #1 will hit store shelves on July 28th, the same day as Barbaric #2. It can be ordered at local comic shops everywhere using the Diamond Order Code APR219822.

Witchblood is co-created by best-selling writer Michael Moreci (The Plot, Wasted Space), and star artist Nathan Gooden (Brandon Sanderson's Dark One, Vampire: The Masquerade), with colors by Addison Duke, letters by Jim Campbell, and design by Tim Daniel. The full synopsis can be read below:

Owen the Barbarian has been cursed to do good with what remains of his life. His bloodthirsty weapon, Axe, has become his moral compass with a drinking problem. Together they wander the realm, foredoomed to help any who seek assistance. But there is one thing Owen hates more than a life with rules: Witches.

Welcome to the skull-cracking, blood-splattering, mayhem-loving comic brave enough to ask: How can a man sworn to do good do so much violence? Hah! F***ing with you. It's just...BARBARIC.
