I’ve been enjoying getting to know this world and this franchise through the books Titan has been putting out so far. This one is decidedly different from those though. It’s more focused on one order and a direct mission and I think it’s giving Ryan and us a chance to really get to know more about his faction. Yes i’m still not sure who’s supposed to be who yet, as in good, bad or indifferent and it’s nice to see one group get a story to focus on so we better make up our own mind in that decision process.
One of the things I have noticed is that in Warhammer religion of a sort seems to play a massive role in all the orders. It feels like I think it would’ve been during the Crusades, “Holy Men” waging war destroying anyone who believes in a different way of life and hoping to be the last man standing proving your righteousness was the right motivation. Just place it in outer space with some big badass bulky armour and viola you’ve got my take so far on Warhammer. Still it’s a great opportunity for everyone because of what you can do with the characters and their surroundings.
I’ve become a big fan of Daniel’s skills for creating the interiors. I was talking about creativity and imagination and what he can and what Kevin finishes off brings to life so beautifully. From the utilisation of page layouts with their angles and perspective to the way he uses backgrounds to really envelop readers into what’s happening. There’s both a softness here at times to balance out the harsh hardness of the metal and warlike situations with is so well done.
I have to say Ryan really does some nice work here with the story and the characterisation. I mean yeah there’s all sorts of messed up version of a Holy War going on and a zealot kind of fervour over one of their own and that kind of sets up why and how things get started. There’s more that’s unrevealed as of yet which is the main two’s personal reasons for volunteering for this mission. So we have a nice explanations and a mystery to go along with it right here to capture the interest and keep it. The way the issue is structured and the pacing here is nicely done and intertwines action, adventure and intrigue into this extremely well.
Titan Comics has really the go to place where you want to take a franchise to expand into the comics medium. From RPG’s to Video Games, movies and television series they’ve managed to make these books not only stand alone experiences but a gateway for people to want to e experience them in their original mediums. This is how you excite people to try new things by bringing them adaptations that ignite their imagination and creativity to go alongside that piqued curiosity.
