So I’ll say this as far this man goes i’m as familiar with him as I saw during the election coverage. Which to say isn’t very much. Though it’s fair to say that anyone running for any kind of public office is fair game for scrutiny and much of what we get here is from public records. It isn’t told to take a specific slant and either praise or condemn it’s meant to educate you on the man himself. Think that is what Darren ultimately has in mind when deciding on which figures to put out a comic on. I like that because while I may not go do the research myself it’s interesting to see it laid before me like this. I think Michael does a really nice job in telling his story here.
I think this is told in a very smart manner. I like that we see this is Marco’s story told by him though he’s coached by someone to keep what he’s saying more relatable to his constituents. Changings past to present tense, saying that certain aspects of the story may appear to be somewhat incongruous. That there will be times he has to defend certain claims he’s made and why that is necessary.
Also very much at it’s core is the son of immigrants who wants to live the American dream and be all he can be and make a difference in the world. Personal feelings aside I do find it odd that the son of Cuban immigrants would be a staunch Republican but that’s purely my bias because his story makes me feel for him. To feel proud for him for what he was able to accomplish and where he got to. Granted his beliefs are another story that’s subjective to everyone however and we aren’t here to discuss those.
I love the black and white artwork here. It’s so much nice to see the linework, attention to detail and the use of the backgrounds in the panels really stands out. Vincenzo’s eye for storytelling is strong and the flow of the book is very nicely done. The characters look great and the resemblance is perfect. I think not doing this in colour was the absolute right choice as this has a much greater impact.
Political figures are a dime a dozen these days and many make the news for all the wrong reasons. I like what Storm Entertainment does and give you the unbiased look at the person, their story which is on public record and presented so you really can see past the political agenda and appreciate the person, if not their politics.
This another successful look at a man and his family and how his journey to where he currently is came to be.
