The Rangers must face a seemingly all-powerful threat entirely on their own without the guidance of Zordon. As the fate of the world hangs in the balance, Jason must lead the Rangers through these darkest of times.
New story arc folks means a good time to get on board if you haven’t been reading this series yet. No you don’t have to be a fan of the show to enjoy this either trust me i’ve seen one episode in my lifetime and i’m a fan of this series. Kyle is bringing the teamwork and family aspect that made the New Teen Titans and New Mutants so successful in the 80’s to this series and with this level of characterisation and storytelling, not to mention interior artwork, I for the first time see them as a legitimate superhero team.
I touched upon it but I’m going to expand on it, the interiors here that is. With what Hendy and Matt are doing on the page makes those cheap, see cheesy, villain costumes into something so much more realistically menacing. Not only that but with the way the costumes fit and how all characters who appear can move and project that sense of action really makes this as thrilling as it is. The attention to detail here is phenomenal and the Hendry’s use of page layouts, angles, perspective and backgrounds only serve to enhance the fact that this isn’t for kids anymore. There’s a real comic book superhero thing going on here that grabs your attention and doesn’t let go.
So the Black Dragon is introduced and he’s working with, notice with not for, Rita and he’s in a class her minions will never be. But here’s the jist folks Zordon and Alpha are missing, their headquarters damaged and the kids have to go on the run from a foe they nothing about that is able to mess with their powers. Well all their powers but Tommy’s because as we’ve seen his is powered by Green Chaos energy, a different source than the other Rangers.
So how will they cope that remains to be seen as the team, minus one member, manages to transport to Zordon’s pocket dimension. However the team isn’t as safe from the Black Dragon as they think they are. With all the teamwork they can muster and having to put their trust in Tommy will this finally be when the entire team learns they can trust him and that’s a member of the family? Who knows we’ll have to wait and see how Kyle decides all this is going to play out. In the meantime enjoy the stellar teenage characterization which by the way is another mega reason to be reading this series.
While I may never go to Netflix and binge the television series you can bet your sweet britches i’ll be following Boom!’s series closely!
