Last issue ended with things really starting to heat up. The Sheriff finally said okay it’s time for him to go, Mac’s caused himself too much attention and figured something isn’t right in town. Meanwhile Mabel showed up at his house and hit him over the head knocking him out which is where we left off and pick up.
The idea of love at first sight for some people is a silly romantic notion that doesn’t exist, mainly because they’ve never had it happen to them. For others it’s a dream they want to or have experienced. Either way the notion is something James is doing something very different with considering the two types of people involved here.
This issue Mabel and Mac finally get a chance to meet and get to know a little about the other. Granted it feels like something out of Fifty Shades of Grey, only a hell of a lot sexier, but still it’s got this whole unmistakable vibe about it that you won’t be able to shake. Tom and Dave do some great things with that visually too as all this takes place in Mac’s bedroom with him handcuffed to the bed frame in a darkened room. So it’s very much a lot of shaded visuals that make the scenes come off as both erotic and dangerous.
I love how James has this whole thing structured! There’s a tension mounting as the Sheriff and his men are loading up for bear to after Mac as Mabel has him tied up. The interplay between the two segments are beautifully done so that we have no real idea of a time frame here just that it could all explode, literally, at any moment.
Seriously the use of page layouts with how angles, perspective and backgrounds are utilised here are superbly done. The tension from the story shines through beautifully and when, well we get to certain parts it all gets hypersensitive to see. Plus the use of dark and light here couldn’t have been done any better. Oh yeah plus that final shot oh yeah that was nice too.
So this whole issue was like some huge tease and set up for what’s to come. With the Sheriff’s department ready to take Mac out and having no idea that Mabel is with him well things could get messy. Plus Mac’s still handcuffed to the headboard so there’s that but she’ll find the key in time, hopefully. Now that the star crossed lovers have found one another, changed how they think and feel, mostly about one another, and her vengeance for Steve’s death subsided well it’s time for the next chapter.
Hopefully we’ll be learning what it is that Mac was on the verge of discovering. I mean there was way too much money in that bank and everyone seems to know why but Mac and Mabel. So it’s off to the races as the shooting is about to begin and we’ll see if this newfound love at first sight romance can survive, not just the initial barrage of bullets either.
Smart, stylised and tension filled this is the issue not to miss folks!
