Alright with the previous two books that were leading up to this giving me a reason to check this out here we are. So what are my opinions for this book well we’ll go through piece by piece. These tribes that are represented in the beginning don’t make sense to me they look like Legion symbols and with this new twist i’m just not sure why it’s there and whom they are supposed to represent.
So i’m not following the Justice League and that it opens up with them facing Mongul and in this weird armour well it’s just an oh okay kind of moment. I feel lost because I don’t really see what this moment has to do with the story at hand. I like it, it would great in its own series but here I question it. The best part of it is that the Braalians are mentioned. Then there’s the whole Voltron thing what the hell is that supposed to be about?
See I would have been happier if we’d seen the event in Gotham that brought them all together and started the issue there. Why because it brings in the lost characters we want to see again pure and simple. More importantly Will Payton!!! Loved that guy and his time as Starman, so seeing him, the Challengers of the Unknown and the Red Tornado not to mention Kendra and the Blackhawks.
So that the Flash is familiar with the multiverse comes as no surprise he and Batman well they’ve got that kind of covered. Kendra’s talking about it is among the highlights here. This would’ve been great to see happen after Batman encountering Green Lantern in the Batcave.
I just feel that this whole thing is poorly brought together. Yes there’s a lot of great things here but it doesn’t live up to the hype for me. Scott’s better than this and we’ve seen that plenty of times so that this is as big of a mish mosh as I see it to be well that’s just disappointing. The best of it is really seeing those “forgotten” characters.
I will say Greg lives up to the reputation he’s built for himself here. His linework is nice, his composition and page layouts are extremely tight and well utilised. The angles, perspective and use of backgrounds here continue to demonstrate his growth and maturity as an artist. With the team behind him we see a lot of great moments here, sans the Voltron one I’m still shaking my head with that.
Maybe i’m burnt out on big company events and that’s influencing my judgment here but the set-up was better than the delivery for me. Also too many damn covers to choose from that gimmick is even more tired than big company summer events.
