Gaining new insight from the escapades of noted Assassins Ezio Auditore and Darim Ibn-La'Ahad, Berg's search now leads him to the turbulent waters of the Caribbean as he joins the famed pirate Assassin Edward Kenway and his quartermaster Adéwalé on their final
swashbuckling skirmish together.
I continue to praise Titan Comics because they’ve gone and done something special with this whole franchise. They’ve made it accessible to those of us who don’t play video games. With this run Ian has been introducing readers to some of the game's most notorious Assassins and it’s been great fun! As we’ve been introduced to the newest and most original characters in previous tales it’s nice to see the folks that kind of started it all and made this game as popular as it is. The folks really do an amazing job bringing us into the classic side of the franchise.
Ian does a great job with how he not only introduces us to the story but how he’s done this throughout. Showing Berg doing research to better understand the mind of an Assassin with these stories is a fantastic idea. It not only shows us Berg isn’t a dummy, overconfident and as narcissistic as some villainous men tend to be but his willingness to understand his enemy better makes him better at what he does. Something too many people never understand, to be better at what you do you have to understand how others do it as well.
Valeria and Carlos do some great work on the interiors here. The classic comic book style is wonderful to see. Also that we get to see the modern age with the sleek glass style building then we’re off to the past and pirates and ships at sea the wide array of what they can do visually is magnificent. Well at sea there isn’t cause for a lot of use of backgrounds but we do get to see Kenway’s tattoo’s which are too faded for my tastes but at least they are present. The utilisation of page layouts through angles and perspective is well done.
I will say this much with the introduction of these characters now i’d really like to see more of their adventures. This opens up a whole new realm of possibilities for storytelling. Exploring the past and the whole Assassin’s Creed universe. Just let the creativity flow like we see here where Kenway utilises a diving bell apparatus to bring sunken treasure from a ship at the bottom of the ocean. There’s so much of the past that is known and unknown at the same time where the right imagination and creativity can create scenarios where fiction blends into history in such a way to confuse the reader.
